The tap dance community (especially the Black leaders) are exhausted by their efforts to destigmatize the art form in popular media. It’s posts like this that continue to disrespect & do harm. So if you claim to be anti-racist now’s the time to get educated on how tap dance history is Black history

Tap Dance was born out of US enslavement—Black ppl were using drums to communicate & plan escape, drums were taken away, they began to use bodies/feet. In the minstrel era all Black performers were exploited but tap continues to get the brunt of the connotation with appeasing white ppl/“c**ning”

Disappointing to come on this app searching for fellow tap dancers & be met with search results riddled with folks (many who claim to be leftists/radical/anti-oppressors) using the term in this way. Tap dance is revolutionary & born out of Black resistance. Be mindful of your language and history!
