As Potter explains here, the ambiguity of Heathcliff's identity feeds into contemporary constructions of the Roma as unknowable, mysterious or uncanny. 12/

One would need to be of a particularly rash and unwise disposition to gainsay @madelinepotter.bsky.social on this.

Racists, she's thought harder on this than you, understands this better than you ever could, and is so much smarter than you it's unfair. Go home, you're embarrassing yourselves.

First up, Wuthering Heights and it's adaptations have nothing to do with race, right? That's what (certain people) like to tell us.

When people say that Wuthering Heights doesn't have anything to do with race or that no film has engaged with race, what they mean is that for them Romani people do not count and they also haven't been paying attention. I'm going to share a little material from a recent talk. Content note: racism 1/

It was an absolute pleasure to talk to Pierce on the latest episode of ‘O Verda Darano’. We chatted about spooky Romani folklore, vampires, and sorts of revenants in Roma culture, as well as interacting with gothic media as a Roma person. Tune in here

I was looking up the Cliff Richard Wuthering Heights and found some clips. I laughed so hard I cried and have not stopped laughing. A clip. I really tried not to laugh. The boat remains a mystery.

Delighted to have been interviewed by one of my outstanding students for The Tab about my book ‘The Roma’. To me, meaningful student engagement with this project has been one of the most rewarding parts of the book journey. 🙏 Read it here:

Oh my goodness the example for the @merriam-webster.com word of the day (‘veritable’) in context is taken from my book, ‘The Roma’ 😳and yes, the Roma are a veritable mosaic 😅

www.merriam-webster.com/word-of-the-...
Word of the Day: Veritable
Veritable, like its close relative verity ('truth'), came to English through Anglo-French from Latin, ultimately the adjective vērus, meaning 'true,' which also gave English verify, aver, and verdict.

In 1893, Bram Stoker hiked up to Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire - it became a partial inspiration for Castle Dracula. Today I was thrilled to be able to see hike up there too and see the ruined castle in all its Gothic glory. Thanks @romgothsam.bsky.social for such a fun day!!

If you can only imagine Heathcliff as sexy if he's white, if you don't question move to a white actor in your creation of your fantasy version of Wuthering Heights, if you think 'he's sexy' is an excuse for whitewashing and not a red flag... you're ignoring some pretty obvious problems. 4/
