No holds barred from @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social that punctures much of the AI hype, showing just how much it is infected by bias, repugnant ethics and self-dealing, with all-too-tangible harms being trivialised. A timely read 💙📚

What your average LinkdedIn life/career advice sounds like:

Here is what I learned:
Water is wet
The sky is blue
Grass is green
Just be yourself
Follow your heart

When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on

Really appreciate this review of our book (w/ @alexhanna.bsky.social)

"By insisting on the term “automation,” Bender and Hanna reveal that what’s sold as innovation is often just labor displacement with better branding."

"…a demystifying, often hilarious lexicon that cuts through the fog of hype."
"The new Luddites aren’t afraid of AI. They’re afraid of the people who profit from pretending it’s intelligent." Erik J. Larson reviews "The AI Con" by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-return-of-the-luddites/

Whenever people find out I’m returning to part time work they seem surprised, but honestly I used to be able to make rent six times over during my Monster Mashtober runs. Now I make enough to maybe cover my health insurance payment for one month. Huge shifts in online spaces and sales

You adapt!

Tried watching "Twin Peaks" for the first time and my verdict is "It's boring" after one episode... am I uncultured? D:
Should I just keep watching?

why would ai boost productivity its like giving you a coworker who doesnt understand what facts or objective reality are whose output you are responsible for
Two trials will be repeated endlessly despite always producing the same results:

1) Does UBI work? (yes)
2) Does AI improve productivity? (no)
M365 Copilot fails to up productivity in UK government trial
: AI tech shows promise writing emails or summarizing meetings. Don't bother with anything more complex

The life lessons you share are on a par with „water is wet“ and I‘m tired of pretending otherwise.

Something I didn't get to say yesterday:

We heard over and over during the event about "human-centered" approaches to "AI". But if refusal is not on the table (at every level: individual students and teachers right up through UNESCO) then we have in fact centered the technology, not the people.
It has been really interesting to attend UNESCO's Digital Learning Week (though unfortunately I'm not able to stick around). My public lecture from yesterday can be found here:
