Follow up: had a very good grown-up birthday party on the weekend, my first since 2019. Still feeling a little emotional about change but leaning into the discomfort with change and feeling grateful for friends, new and old, in my life.

I would too! Note I jotted down when that NYT Top 100 movies thing was going around: “Zodiac (Memories of Murder is actually the better version of this so should be ranked above Zodiac, both are easily in my Top Ten)”

Oh don’t get me wrong, his list is Stupid City

Fair enough, I happen to think Zodiac is the best of that run, but your mileage may vary, of course.

And for what it’s worth, Inglorious Basterds is one of my top 20 movies of the 21st century, shrug emoji

I’ve come to accept that I think QT is exceptionally juvenile in the way he expresses opinions and know not to take him seriously, but no need for Dano to catch such strays!

Love & Mercy number one with a bullet

I’m not really arguing the merits of JG’s original post, I’m arguing that Hopper doesn’t just have parental fear, he is being an absolute dickhead. Compare him continually berating El to Joyce listening to Will when he explains why he went behind her back.

Nah lol, Hopper remains a dick

Imagine how annoying it would be if Xander and Giles, each season, were too overprotective of Buffy. And that’s exactly what Stranger Things is doing here.

That’s what I prefer about a show like Buffy (weird Joss Whedon/Xander stuff notwithstanding). Our characters know about the world of monsters. Our characters know what Buffy is capable of, and of course what other characters are capable of as the show goes on.

I was thinking about this, specifically with Hopper and El. At the start of Stranger Things, when the characters aren’t used to a world of monsters/supernatural shit, it makes sense for Hopper to be overprotective/think El can’t survive things. But at this point in the show, let El be Buffy!
