20. Luigi's Mansion

Fun, short game. Controls felt a bit iffy on 3DS, but it wasn't particularly punishing, so I could deal with it fine. Funny profile write-ups for the ghosts, too!

19. Shadow of the Colossus

A very neat game, though some of the implied narrative was lost on me until the ending. And then much of the ending was lost on me as well. In terms of Ueda works, I do like Ico better.

18. Final Fantasy II Pixel Remaster

I don't know if it's because I more-or-less know how the game's systems work or if the Pixel Remaster is a lot more forgiving, but this version of the game felt incredibly easy, laughably so. Which is a shame, because it does a lot of good QoL stuff.

17. Supaplex

This was probably my favourite game, it was interesting to see just how many levels I remembered and how far into the game I remembered them. A decent version too, though I prefer the original music over whatever remixes they included, it just sounds more... industrial.

16. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

An interesting game. The Remembrance and Analysis sections I particularly liked, but the Destruction RTS/TD mode felt like a chore in comparison, even on the lowest difficulty setting. Somehow my first Vanillaware game, some of that reputation really shone through...

15. Wario Land (Virtual Boy)

The game has a certain novelty that comes with playing a Virtual Boy game, but having played the later Wario Land games, it just feels a bit safe and same-y. Neat, but not Switch peripheral-level neat.

14. Policenauts

I can't help but compare this game to Snatcher, and I think it comes up short. The premise of Snatcher I think is stronger, though Policenauts certainly is more cinematic. It's also several times more verbose (halting gameplay) and horny (halting motivation). Worthwhile, but flawed.

13. Snatcher

Actually my first Kojima game! The story and intrigue are very good, and the look into a possible future shows what could (have) be(en). Unfortunately Act 3 is a bit of a letdown, honestly feels grafted on; rather any ending than the cliffhanger of the PC-88/MSX2 original, I suppose!

8-12. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 (MM7-MM10)

For another Mega May I wanted to hit up another Mega Man collection, so here we finish classic. These games continue to not take prisoners, sometimes to their detriment. I miss rewinding...

7. Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster

Wanted a short game to tide me over until May, so I skipped ahead to this classic. It's even shorter than I remember, but it's still a great game. The lack of the remake's postgame content really stings though, I like those dungeons a lot.

6. Ico

This sure is an incredible experience, but as a game... many of the systems feel frustrating, and the original NTSC PS2 release compounded on them. I like it, but I could go for like... half as much combat in this game. Otherwise it's just a very, very neat game.

5. Crimson Gem Saga

The gameplay is good and the humour is actually mostly amusing. Unfortunately, the story builds on a game everybody agrees nobody should play and the game suffers for it. Definitely had more potential than what was realised, but worth at least one play.

4. Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure

Picked this one up again after softlocking myself a while ago and it's very neat. Very trial-and-error at times, but it doesn't particularly punish you for it. All in all it's just... neat.

2-3. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA/3DS)

This one was fine, enemy attacks often had way too many elements to dodge and the tells aren't always clear. The 3DS version had a lot of improvements and niceties (Map! Record! Bros. Attacks!), but Bowser's Minions seemed lackluster.

1. Picross S4

It's more Picross. I still enjoy them, but I've played a fair few of these over the years, so at this point I play like one of these per year.
February 27, 2025 at 9:52 AM
It's so good, but I'll always place the original release over the 3ds remake. It just hits different.

24. Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail

Considering my track record with staying on the critical path I wasn't expecting to finish DT this year, but here we are! People seem down on it, but I quite liked it. Looking forward to Post and the FFXI ARs, along with side content.

23. Monument Valley 3

The strange thing I felt about this third installment is that the less opaque the underlying story is, the less I enjoyed it. There were some neat puzzle evolutions and I'll definitely check out the DLC, but compared to the first two it's a bit... less.

21-22. Monument Valley + Monument Valley 2

Replayed these in anticipation of Monument Valley 3, and they sure are some neat puzzle games. I'm too dumb to understand what the story is, but they've got a great vibe.

20. Paper Trail

Cute little puzzle game that turns pretty darn difficult sometimes. Aside from the neat origami motif, the music and especially the credits song was the big standout for me.

18-19. New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U

It's one of them Mario games, so you know it's decent, but NSLU is a real great time. Shorter time limits means shorter stages yet more fun. And the challenges in NSMBU are great too, if too dangerous for my free time.

17. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker

Already finished the base expansion over two months ago and I've just been faffing about with relics and what have you. This expansion was pretty good, not as great as Shadowbringers, but that was a high bar. Still good though.

16. Arcade Archives THE TOWER OF DRUAGA
This game... is hard. It's interesting though, and more than a little cruel. In 1984 this must have been the coolest thing around, and even though in 2024 it is not, it's still interesting (as long as you've got some niceties).

15. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers
It took me a while to get around to it, and then to finish it, but 5.0 was very cool. As I did all sidequests alongside the main story, lore and stories fit quite well together. Now there's a lot to catch up to before moving on to Post...

8-14. Mega Man Legacy Collection (MM1-MM6)

It's been a long time since I played classic Mega Man and I wanted to get in gear to play the collections at least. These games don't take prisoners most of the time, it's kind of insane.
