I've always known them as "Dewey Bars." Usually seen on old 10-speeds and done by someone who recently had their license suspended after getting one too many DUIs (hence, Dewey)

Great place to start a day on the river, too. Kayak from there to Rum River South (aka: Anoka County Fairgrounds) or a little farther and paddle right into the Social District (make sure you exit the river before the dam, lol)

Please tell @metrotransitmn.bsky.social to not waste resources on Route 888 (which it will likely shut down within 3 years of starting) and instead invest in better frequency and expanded hours for the 802 (and extend the route up to cover the Ramsey station)
June 10, 2025 at 2:38 PM
They want to run Route 888 down four congested highways instead of letting the 802 & 850 do the job (for part of its route, the 802 would run in the Bus Only Lanes that have existed along Coon Rapids Blvd for decades)
June 10, 2025 at 2:38 PM
Mediocre by design. The proposed bus to replace this train will cost millions and duplicates existing services (less frequently) to move 100 people (based on March ridership numbers) between Ramsey/Anoka/Coon Rapids & Minneapolis.
June 10, 2025 at 2:38 PM
Asking people to tell @metrotransitmn.bsky.social to drop their awful (and completely redundant) Route 888 proposal & invest in expanded operating hours & better frequency for Route 802.

Half of 888 is identical to the planned 850 route, but 888 is less frequent. Why waste resources on this?
June 10, 2025 at 2:19 PM
Not only could you not make the trip up here & back on transit, but we will be forced to drive to any event in Minneapolis or St. Paul that starts after 6:30p. Even on weekends.

So much for the idea of making transit useful for more than just the 9-5 workforce...
June 10, 2025 at 2:19 PM
When Network Now gets fully implemented & if the bus they propose replacing the Northstar with gets implemented as proposed, the only route operating between Mpls & the north metro after 6:30p will be the 10. No transit will operate north of Highway 610 after 7p.
June 10, 2025 at 2:19 PM
You were an hour late. For a 1:10 game the train would have gotten there a little after noon (12:12p specifically).

But I agree. The promotion of when the Northstar runs for Twins games has been abysmal this year.

The 802 connects to Routes 10, 25, 725, 805, 824, 850, 852, and 860. There's no way those connections will be made efficiently on its planned schedule.

With a little bit of investment, the 802 would be a workhorse for the NW Metro. Shut down the train, don't do 888, and invest in 802 instead.
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
The 802 runs along a stretch of E River Rd that has had Bus Only Lanes for decades. This would reduce travel time during rush hour & it should use Crooked Lake instead of Hanson to switch between Northdale & E River Rd, just to get it into the Bus Only Lane sooner (the 805 should be changed as well)
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
It could also help with parking during events in the NW Metro - like the Game Fair in Ramsey, 4th of July in Coon Rapids, and Halloween/Food Trucks/Riverfest/Tree Lighting in Anoka - by spreading the parking out to the Northstar Stations & Foley Blvd.
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
Once Network Now is fully implemented, the only transit between the NW Metro & Mpls after 7pm will be the 10, and it ends at Northtown. Extending the 802s hours will allow transit to be used for events in Mpls & keep a lot of drunk drivers off the road. Anoka's Social District is also on this route.
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
Plus, it connects those same centers to a Cub, Walmart, Aldi, and Target, which will give the people who can no longer drive some of their independence back (if MetroTransit will finally address the fact that they have a non-ADA compliant stop sitting at a facility for people with mobility issues).
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
This puts all three Northstar stations on the same route as the Foley Blvd Park & Ride (where the 850 terminates) and allows for easy transfers to Minneapolis.

It also puts three assisted living facilities on the same route as the Health Partners clinic in Anoka and the VA clinic in Ramsey.
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
Instead, let's extend the planned Route 802 up to cover the Ramsey station and Health Partners clinic in Anoka, increase its frequency to match the 850 during rush hour, run it every half hour outside of rush hour (as a staring point), and extend its operating hours to midnight-ish.
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
The proposed Route 888 will only serve Ramsey, Anoka, and Coon Rapids before heading to Minneapolis. Average daily ridership to and from those three stations in March totaled 198.

MetroTransit is looking for a single seat option from Ramsey to Mpls and is proposing a service few will use.
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
Half of the proposed Route 888 is identical to the planned Route 850, but the 850 is planned to run twice as frequently during rush hour.

It's also planned to run almost entirely on Highways 10, 610, 252, and 94 which see plenty of congestion and will impact the reliability of the route.
May 29, 2025 at 4:04 PM
Largely agree, but some portion of the money saved from shutting the Northstar down should be spent improving transit along the Northstar corridor. And the proposed Route 888 is not a suitable replacement. It smells of a route they plan to shut down in three to five years.
