Archeologen in Estland hebben een opmerkelijke vondst gedaan: een stuk berkenpek dat 10.500 jaar geleden door een tienermeisje werd gekauwd. Het zwarte klompje, ontdekt door het Instituut voor Geschiedenis en Archeologie van de Universiteit van Tartu, bevatte duidelijke tandafdrukken en sporen van speeksel. Uit DNA-analyse bleek dat de kauwer waarschijnlijk bruin haar en bruine ogen had, wat bestaande aannames over het uiterlijk van vroege Noord-Europeanen uitdaagt.
