for folks who want an ongoing supply of "oh my god this is all just bullshit" I recommend the podcast Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 by @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social, whose book The AI Con is linked in the essay
The Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 Podcast
Our biweekly podcast deflates AI hype and draws attention to the real harms of the automation technologies we call "artificial intelligence".

Big Tech's embrace of President Trump has left many of us wondering: What the hell happened to Silicon Valley?

In our new politics issue, we're getting into it.

Also, we're taking this cover across the US in billboards, posters and a mural. Clues to find us in the 🧵: www.wired.com/politics-iss...

I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.
I Am An AI Hater
I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

Netflix boss Ted Sarandos says they used generative AI for the first time to cut costs on their sci-fi show 'The Eternaut'

"AI represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better — not just cheaper"

One of the coolest features of the Agami Heron is its gorgeous, flowing crest that flutters as it poses and preens. But I've never seen it up close before with the details and textures.

This is insane. Republicans have inserted language into the budget reconciliation bill that would ban states from regulating AI in any capacity for 10 years.

Story of my pfp

Inspired by @jdebbiel.bsky.social I drew a Ghibli-style self-portrait too, but with my non-dominant hand on purpose. My point is “art” doesn’t have to be perfect or pretty, it doesn’t even have to be “good”; it only has to be honest.

This is excellent 🙏
I have to add iNaturalist.org as a super handy community-led repository for real photos of any plant/animal/fungus you can imagine (and then some.)
You’ll want to check permissions for use, but it’s been a great resource for inspiration & studies!

If you’re looking for a free way to support an author, did you know you can ask your library to stock a book you want to read that they don’t have yet? And usually it’s a very basic online form? Google your library name plus the words “request a title” or “suggest a title” to find yours.

Genuinely think anyone can “git gud” at any creative craft they are interested in. If we wanted to actually “democratize” art we would invest in housing, healthcare, food and education as human rights. All GenAI does is make people even more financially precarious and less able to pursue a passion
I think a bit of the "AI is democratizing art" argument is trying to avoid the ugly truth that to get good at anything you have to do a lot of it. I grew up "knowing" I was a good writer, but I really wasn't until about 700k words, and it took reading hours of scripts to really have a voice
