It is so very shameful. At the same time I get it. The middle class has barely been hanging on for years. Self-preservation is practical. Not brave, but viewed as necessary. I don’t know how to expand their definition of self-preservation. I fear you are right. They won’t act until it’s “personal.”

It’s hard to put a finger on what’s wrong with that, individually. Taking care of your own isn’t inherently bad. But I wish people’s innate definition of “their own” was much more broad than it seems to be. Recognizing common humanity while celebrating differences. Like I learned on Sesame Street.

I’d argue the only relevant difference between them and us is nothing. The possibility that someday they’ll come for other people shouldn’t matter. Not saying you feel this way. Just sad that as a society fear-based self-preservation seems to be our largest motivator.
