She had seen her share of bad cuts after working as a receptionist at the vet for the last four years. It was a little deep but it was- it was closing up right before her eyes. “Holy store brand Wolverine, Batman!” she hissed, looking from the pink mark where the cut had been to Sean’s face and back again. “What the fuck are you?” “I don’t know! That’s new to me, too!” Sean hissed in response, staring at his arm. Operating on the irrational logic of a man who’d just witnessed the impossible, he held up his other arm where he’d been bitten almost two weeks ago. “See, the bite’s still…” He trailed off as the last scab on the series of puncture wounds flaked off his now flawless, if a bit pink, skin. He made a stressed noise not unlike a tea kettle heard through a brick wall.

Vale watched in disappointment as he pulled on his shirt and jacket. “But as long as I'm diligent about keeping my wards up, they won't be able to find me.” He stood in front of her vanity and a breeze kicked up around him, treating her to a blurry vision of undulating white hair and the appearance and prompt disappearance of the almost black ram's horns atop his head. “Also I need to find someplace to wash my clothes today,” he added, starting a braid over his shoulder. “I am out of clean underwear. I thought about trying the lake, but when I asked a guy on the dock about the water quality he told me it wasn't safe to swim in, so I assume it's not going to be good for my skin if I wash my clothes in it?” “Yeah, don't. Paxton was a logging town originally. Dreyfuss Lake is lousy with chemicals,” Vale said, cringing. “Look, come back later with your laundry. I'll get us a ride to the laundromat. I'm overdue for my own laundry day.” She glanced at the heap of dirty laundry spilling out of the top of her hamper.”

An overwhelming wave of despair threatened to drag her under and big, fat, wet tears welled up in her eyes. Betrayal, anger, and sorrow battled for control as she cried and the scar just below her ribs ached like the knife was still lodged in her chest cavity. “Please…” The form sank behind her once more and she watched as its bony, crepey hands traveled up her shoulders and closed around her neck. “Join… me!” The hands tightened around her throat and she felt her airway closing under the pressure. Her hands flew instinctively to her throat and her phone clattered across the concrete as she tried fruitlessly to defend herself. Finding no purchase on the ghostly hands strangling her, she threw herself into the wall and pounded on the steel with a fist, hoping to make enough noise to be heard over Whaley Guts’s opener, “The D stands for Dynamite in O-D-O-T.” Her vision was starting to go black.

One of the big ones is "Eli can't read." The wizard magic that brings the worlds together translates spoken language but not written. Like, we find out later that he's also dyslexic, but by then the joke is already inside the house.

She slapped at her phone until it shut up but by then it was too late, Eli was pulling away, getting up. Getting dressed. “Nice butt,” she said, watching him pull his jeans on. It was a lie; without her glasses, she really had no idea if his butt was still as nice to look at as it had been the night before. It probably was. But she couldn't be certain. “You're sure you can't blow off your thing just this once?” “You know how I said my father was murdered?” Vale nodded and he continued. “Well, I have reason to believe I'm next and if I don't get back to my place and renew the ward the witch gave me, I'll be next a lot sooner than I'd like.” “Oh, that's cool. Probably would have liked to know that before I let you sleep over,” she said, shooting him an unimpressed look. “Would have been nice to know what kind of trouble I was inviting into my home before I let you know where I live, actually.”

Even I can't do anything about the lost limb without the pieces, Tacitus!” One voice, deep for a woman but filled with feminine exasperation, snapped. “Either bring me the missing pieces and I'll keep her stable until you get back or shut up and let me work!” “Oh, sure, Euphie! Let me just go gut the Titania's favorite murder horse and his mate to save an elf's arm. That'll definitely go well for me! Mother will-” The deeper voice of the man - presumably the one who had saved Emily - cut off abruptly as Lukas burst through the front door. Yelling Emily's name like he expected her to still be conscious, much less alive. He found himself in a large workshop, crowded with strange machines, some shiny and new, others draped in cobwebs, and lined with tools both unfamiliar and uncannily similar to what he might find in the garage at home. It was only a few seconds before his brain caught up with his eyes and he realized that the workshop alone was bigger than the entire cottage should have been, and he could see several doors, leading God knows where, dotted around the outside walls, including one on the same wall as the entrance that by all rights should have led right back outside. “What the fuck-?” he murmured.

Lukas had just seen enough of him to know they weren’t just hiding under his clothes. Surely Lukas hadn't just imagined them. “Didn't you have wings before? Do all vampires get wings?” Darien looked up from the pillow in Lukas’s lap where he had been resting his eyes for the last five minutes. “I told you I am not a vampire,” he said. He sounded like Lukas had hit upon a touchy subject. “I am unseelie. A faerie. I get wings. You get immortality. Or something like it.” He closed his eyes again and Lukas’s eyes wandered over Darien’s body, following the black lines, like cracked earth, that spiderwebbed across his chest and abdomen, his eyes coming to rest on the monster between his legs. “I thought you were late,” Darien said pointedly.

She cracked her drink and gave it a sip - peach sparkling water. “How are you so sure the vox is here?” “Because the price I paid for the Witch of Red Sage's spell was far too great to be anything but genuine,” he answered solemnly, squatting on the railing and crossing his arms over his knees. Vale looked up at him curiously. “What price?” “A child.” He spoke without hesitation, as if he wasn't talking about trading in human or, rather, demon life. It was as nonchalant as if he'd had to dig into his savings to fix his car. “She is pregnant with my child,” he elaborated awkwardly. “Congrats?” she offered uncertainly. She wondered what the witch wanted with his child. Presumably not for eating - there had to be more efficient ways to get children to eat - so was it because his family was important? Some kind of power-grab? “Is that going to come back to bite you in twenty years when you're on your death bed and your family finds out you have a secret witch baby who's the legitimate heir to your throne?”

Gavin suspected he'd used the stairs earlier and fallen and he was kind of upset that he'd missed it. He threw the suitcase into the passenger seat of his truck, his hooves making a clip-clop sound on the concrete that had Gavin snickering. “Damn. I thought I was fucked but at least I'm not half furry,” Gavin teased. “I'm pretty sure the correct term is ‘satyr,’ not that the wife seems to think that makes me any less demonic.” Todd scowled. “And yes, the legs did come with a matching fucking dick.” Gavin didn't know how Todd knew that was going to be his next question but he liked spicy Todd. “Time to find out if a satyr can drive a manual,” he said, climbing into his lifted Dodge Ram.
