For the love of jumping genes! Rebel Artist for Science™ here, and I spotted a pink pumpkin—this one's plastic, but pink pumpkins are real. A farmer noticed the mutant among the orange pumpkins in her field. She cultivated more through careful selection and now offers the seeds to other growers.

Rebel Artist out-about, giving free "Stand up for Science" stickers. "I'll take the green one — climate crisis is real,” said the landscaping fellow. "Pulgares hacia arriba for Science!”

Thumbs up for science! You love them, want them, then buy Rebel Artist stickers from: fellmanstudio.com/shop

Did a woman scientist win the 2025 Nobel Prize? YES! Today is a good day for women in science. Dr. Mary Brunkow was awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with her two male colleagues, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi.

Who will win the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine tomorrow? Will it be a woman? Like Dr. Katalin Karikó, who was awarded the Nobel in 2023. I had the chance to speak with the amazing “Kati” Karikó just two days before the announcement.

“Would you like a Rebel Artist for Science sticker?” “Yes,” said a guard at the National Academy of Sciences. “May I have two?” She promptly slapped them on her security officer uniform. We laughed, and said, “We support science. We stick together!”

I get a fierce sense of joy learning from women in science. Like Elizabeth Barnes and Julie Phillips at the Scopes "Monkey" Trial Centennial Symposium. Elizabeth’s (Liz) presentation, ”An Atheist's Unexpected Path to Promoting Harmony between Religion and Evolution," made me think and think again.

Like a punch to the gut. The American flag, tense and twisted. No exuberant flourish in a proud breeze. It’s Summer in Washington D.C., 2025, and this is what tyranny feels like.

You can find the book and notecards with colorful versions of other model organisms at my online shop. They make great gifts for champions of science and your favorite science researchers.

Did you know that Arabidopsis thaliana is a valuable model organism for plant research? My illustration shows @cshlnews.bsky.social Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) plant biologist Dr. Dave Jackson gently cradling the tiny plant, one of his CRISPR experiments in the greenhouse at CSHL.

Hey ladies, don’t you love science that overturns old patriarchal stories? Look at this gal, a lovely figure made by someone in a Neolithic community in Anatolia about 8000-6000 BCE.

The sculpture depicts female power and authority, and here's why researchers think so:

A beautiful day in May. The first full day of the Biology of Genomes meeting at Cold Spring Harbor Lab, New York. The view of the Inner Harbor of Oyster Bay through the pillars of the “Octagon” gazebo on the path to Grace Auditorium.

DEVO had a convert in D.C. and I got to meet the band at Galactic Panther, an Alexandria, Virginia art gallery. I’m with Gerry Casale (on the left) and Bob Mothersbaugh in two photos. And with Mark Mothersbaugh who is thinking grand creative thoughts.

Who’s going to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for the Biology of Genomes meeting? I’ll say hello if I see you lounging at the “Octagon” gazebo on the path to Grace Auditorium.

DNA Day celebrates the marvelous molecule. It takes the shape of a double helix and this mage shows the dynamic, plastic-like ability of the helix. It’s how the magnificent genome works!

It's DNA Day! Celebrating the discovery of the structure 72 years ago. Fifty years later, about 90% of the human genome was complete. The T2T consortium filled the gaps for the complete sequence in 2022. You can find my double helix inspired artwork in my online store: fellmanstudio.com/shop/

Curious people want to know what microRNAs are. They're tiny molecules that help cells control the kind and amount of proteins they make. Gary Ruvkun and Victor Ambros won the 2024 Nobel Prize for discovering miRNAs. The graphic is from the Nobel website, illustrated by Mattias Karlén.
