'Forgotten Journeys, Buried Treasures', detail of a painting completed earlier this year. I thought it was finished last summer, but then it called me back and I made a few more changes.

Back to these circles, which I consider to be sketches of sorts.

I've resolved them for now and will see where, or if, they lead anywhere in terms of more 'finished' works. Wherever this goes is fine with me right now.

Rose des vents I (Compass Rose I)

acrylic on 300 lb paper mounted on cradled wood panel

One of those paintings that was in the works for a while before it took an unexpected turn and re-energized the work.

Elon Musk’s team posted an online “wall of receipts,” celebrating how much it had saved by canceling federal contracts.

Now it has deleted all of the five biggest “savings” on that original list, after The New York Times and other media outlets pointed out they were riddled with errors.
DOGE Quietly Deletes the 5 Biggest Spending Cuts It Celebrated Last Week
The cuts, highlighted on an earlier version of the “wall of receipts” posted by Elon Musk’s team, contained mistakes that vastly inflated the amount of money saved.

A few moments on this beautiful afternoon to watch clouds, clear the mind, and listen to the snow melt off the roof.

Bird sounds were an extra bonus. 💚

Finished this painting last December and still contemplating a title for it.
It was one of those pieces that went through many drastic changes before it 'settled', and I think that's part of the reason I haven't settled on a title yet.

For years, officials in the Czech Republic had pushed a dam project to protect a river south of Prague, and the critically endangered species living in it. But the project stalled.

In the meantime, the beavers of Prague simply built dams themselves, saving the government some 1.2 million euros.
Czech Dam Project Was Stalled by Bureaucracy. Beavers Built Their Own.
The dam project, drafted in 2018 and based on a former military training site south of Prague, had been delayed by land negotiations. Local beavers built several dams, saving the government more than ...

I haven’t had much studio time lately as someone close to me is on their final journey in this life. Meanwhile, I’m still working with these circular shapes when I do get a few quiet moments.

Detail of a current work in progress. A slow build up of colour and texture.

Every morning I observe the winter light while still waking. When I get to the studio, I work from memory to incorporate my impressions into previous layers.

Yesterday it took ages to get going in the studio. Finally, at the end of the afternoon, I just started making circles from painted papers I’d been working on.

It was all I felt I could do, so I did. Many days, the important thing is to show up.

Finally resolved, there really isn’t more I want to do with this painting now.

‘The Search for Meaning’ (provisional title) 2023/25.

'Efflorescence'
Taking these photos of two lovely Hellebores in my garden last spring as a point of departure and reference, I worked on this painting for a few months, slowly building up layers and layers of colour and texture. 🌼

Quiet afternoon in the studio -- having a bit of time to breathe and gather my thoughts.

Studio view, early January. I've been doing some work on paper lately as there are some fun techniques I'm exploring, and trying to refine.
