The benefit of an 8am meeting is that you are done and have the rest of your day by the time you'd usually start your work day. The downside is that it's an 8am meeting.

Trapped at home due to repairs on the apartment, I decided to make holiday ornaments for gifts.

One of those projects where as I work on it and I start to explain the semiotic layers in a proposal I realize I've become really annoying with embedded meaning, both intentional and actual.

When I went looking for my first car the main concern I had was fuel efficiency. I want to understand why anyone would actively seek a fuel inefficient car.

I am listening to someone softly practicing an aria on the bus.

Ah, thanksgiving. The weekend when professors look around their homes and ask "when did I vacuum last? Where did all these piles of papers and books come from?"

Baltimore : you are only allowed to show one parking sticker, and must fully remove the previous year's parking sticker.
Also Baltimore: let's buy stickers that require a combination of razor blades, denatured alcohol, and nail polish remover to completely remove them.

Reading today about a daylight mugging where someone took groceries.

It's getting real.

It's about cruelty. It's only about cruelty and an enforcement of extreme poverty.

Watching V:The Final Battle (1984) is weirdly appropriate for our current times. Also it's not nearly as bad as I expected it to be.

I've been in the process of making a huge transition in my work this past couple of years. I'm not sure what that means, only that this new direction feels correct, like I'm building myself into a better form.

Hopefully next year my work will be ready to be seen/heard. It's not a fast process.

The New Katamari Damacy is really fun and totally worth it. I didn't get the song bundle, and I may regret that in the future, but I am still having a blast rolling things up.

One of the most influential professors in my life passed away yesterday. Her art and practice was always inspiring, and her thinking in/around music was very exciting. I'm ever grateful for her introducing me to experimental film. Thank you, Sheri. Thank you. www.instagram.com/p/DP3qoZ_AEH...

Sheri Wills Schettino 1963—2025, @_sheriwills_Sheri Wills Schettino died on October 10, 2025, after eighteen months of living privately with cancer. Sheri was the beautiful human being, brilliant artist, best friend, creative partner, and wife, that I had the honor to walk through the world with for the past twenty years. Her kindness warmed our life together and her artwork illuminated worlds around us with meaning and possibility. In her art Sheri worked to develop an understanding of time and memory by exploring gaps between what’s seemingly measurable in the physical world and what’s perceived through lived experience. Her work calls attention to the potential of those gaps as sites of meaning. She said, “I endeavor to realize these ideas through work that is intellectually sound and experientially profound – a meaningful ‘beauty’ that affords personal and emotional resonance.”Her work was recognized in the U.S. and internationally including recently with a Guggenheim Fellowship, a residency at MASS MoCA, and a FluxusMuseum Prize commission and exhibition of her final work “BROADCAST” on the Cycladic island of Paros, Greece.Sheri was a beloved teacher and administrator at the Rhode Island School of Design. On her passing RISD stated that under Sheri’s leadership, the Film, Animation, Video department “strengthened its position as a leading collective in time-based media, affirming the centrality of both exploratory and justice-based work in its curriculum and its ethos. . . . Professor Wills inspired students to learn fearlessly and colleagues to share their expertise generously.”Going forward I will be stewarding Sheri’s legacy and artworks, including seeking to appropriately archive and place her work.In keeping with her wishes Sheri’s social media accounts will be going offline in future. With gratitude and love,John Schettino(Photo by JS, Breakfast with Sheri at Café Bräunerhof, Vienna, 2023.

Went to see Guillermo E Brown at The Park Ave Armory last night. It's always a treat to hear the music made by friends, and seeing the ways they collaborate with others. His new interface is intriguing, and I look forward to seeing and hearing where it goes.

Making the first of three presentations on computer vision today. I always forget how long it takes to make presentation slides, even when I get the luxury of recycling materials.

I have encountered several anti vegetarian arguments lately that I can't wrap my head around, but the level of ignorance around beans and pulses is pretty astonishing.

Focusing on bats and newts is a cynical attempt to reframe nature as nothing more than a triviality

But nature is our life support system

Conservation isn't just about helping other species - it's also about maintaining the conditions that allow us to thrive
