I lost my heart to Jane Schoenbrun when I got to the third shot of the title sequence of their debut, WE'RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD'S FAIR, a shot that casually, roughly, lovingly depicts shopping carts caught atop in a pile of soiled snow in a KFC parking lot. Never, ever, ever before had an image so swiftly conjured my youth, lost somewhere in Iowa, the cold fingers through the holes in my winter gloves, the body-fluid smell of pavement melted clean by road salt, the snow plowed into steeples around the only churches that mattered: grocery stores called Hy-Vee and Easter's, whose lights Jesused from the darkness like Christmas, but also like a laptop, or like a basement TV. Like the characters in I SAW THE TV GLOW, my room was in the cellar, but I had a warm TV, and I, too, watched whatever season-in-progress puzzlement played before Nick-at-Night started showing LEAVE IT TO BEAVER (fine) or LANCELOT LINK: SECRET CHIMP (which made me feel unsettled and oddly filthy). Something about Schoenbrun: they make the loneliest images in cinema history. The laptop like a crack in a caved-in mine. The sickened stumbling through a Chuck E. Cheese colorcade of blinking lights -- another Christmas sensation. Christmas has always been the saddest time, hasn't it? I knew it when I saw The Godfather, and Michael Corleone discovers his father's assassination while sleigh bells ring-ting-tingle. Near the end of I SAW THE TV GLOW, the actor Justice Smith opens his chest, and there it is in the glowing crevasse of his skinny body: my heart, where I'd lost it in that KFC parking lot. A brilliant, coruscating object that Jane Schoenbrun, damn them, doesn't permit to be the film's final, overwhelming image, there's too much beauty, too much hope. There's one more shot and it tells me things are not going to be all right, and I wish it weren't there, except that I know it means Schoenbrun isn't finished, has more to say, and so I wait, heartless, and pace the cold walk to KFC, and pray before the floating shopping carts. It's Christmas. Let's run away.

Sometimes, you don't need to tell a character's back story in lengthy flashbacks. Sometimes, you just need to give them ONE moment so badass, the viewer will instantly know everything they need to know about them.

Yet another Silent Hill style monster. These all might be from completely different versions of Silent Hill, different iterations depending on who wanders in.

These guys, the buzzing boys, are my version of the grey children from the first Silent Hill. They’re my favourite design so far, I think.
A child-sized humanoid runs at the viewer through the mist of silent hill. More of the creatures can be seen approaching as shadows. Its body appears to be made up of a mix of porcelain doll parts and twisted flesh. Its missing an arm, and Its head is a wasps nest, and several wasps circle it in nearby. It has half of a bloody pair of scissors clutched in one hand.

another silent hill monster! i'll go back and name all of these at some point.
a creature made up of four pairs of alabaster pale legs, joined together by twisted raw meat and a frill reminiscent of a tuto that grows over the top of the mass, like a clam shell or the top of a mushroom. the creature is on a dark suburban street in front of a chain link fence.

Wanted to paint my take on a silent hill style creature!
A surreal, grotesque abomination, all leathery brown flesh, exposed ribs and calloused tumours, is bent backwards over a metal pole. The pole penetrates the figure at various points along its length. It has one free arm, horribly thin and long, which it uses to drag itself up and forward. Its face is a white plaster mask facing horizontally forward, the eyes twin black holes.

Another silent hill monster. Trying to play with established features and still spin something new.

Beginning to think that my protagonist would be an ex ballet dancer.
A street at night, lit by flashlight. We can see part of a picket fence in the middle distance. A very tall figure stands before us, it’s head covered by tight canvas. Two layers make up some skirts, and the creatures legs are skinless meaty stilts wrapped in bloody bandage. It has what looks like a camera lense made of rusty metal and glass growing from its chest.

Contams, short for contamination: over the course of their service, some soldiers are warped into unrecognisable forms. This is a normal and expected side effect.
