Every time I make this soup, I just have to laugh at how disgusting it looks. It's good, I swear!
Overhead view of a pot of pureed soup. Looks disgusting but tastes delicious. Ingredients: sautéed onion and garlic, carrots, butternut squash, red lentils, veggie stock. This time I also added soft tofu for extra protein. What makes it yummy is the 'secret' ingredient: jerk spice.

The weather is weathering today.

I went for a bit of a wander earlier this week.
Along the south shore of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, a stand of deciduous trees with gold leaves provides color contrast with the evergreens. Little spots at the bottom of the frame are from tiny fast moving flies just above the surface of the water. Snowcrest Mountain rises over the evergreen forest. I went out on the lake this morning to take pictures of fall foliage, but there really wasn't any. The trees are almost all still green. I did see three Pacific Loons and two bald eagles though, so there's that.
A bald eagle sits on the branch of a tree. It was watching its mate, who was sitting on a dock piling tearing into a fish. One of three Pacific Loons I saw this morning on the west arm of Kootenay Lake. This is a very tight crop of a photo taken at a distance, as loons are very skittish.

I'm working on processing photos, but my brain is screaming at me 'No! Nap! NOW!!'

So I'll pick this up later, but here's a random selection of what I've gotten through so far.
A red classic convertible with the top down sits in front of the Main Street Diner on Baker Street in Nelson BC. The diner has a neon sign and flowers in window boxes surrounding their sidewalk patio. An assortment of classic cars in front of the Baker Street heritage buildings that now house the Oak Hotel and Hub insurance. I went to the classic car parade, mostly just to scout for tomorrow. Between setting up where I was shooting into the sun through the smoke, and not setting the shutter speed fast enough for moving vehicles, you'd think I was new here! But here are a few whole cars (rare for me).
A purple classic car with a white roof and chrome bumper, the sun behind it glinting off the hood. A two toned (red over white) classic car. A butter yellow classic pickup truck with purple flames above the front wheel wells. A silver grey classic car. Sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention to actually identify makes and models, I was mostly watching for curves and lines to go back to tomorrow to do semi-abstracts.

I should specify that this particular car show is the Queen City Cruise in Nelson, BC. There are anywhere from 200-300 classic cars on display. They shut down main street and a block in each direction on the side streets for the day.

So I'm standing on my parents' deck today trying to get photos of uncharacteristically uncooperative hummingbirds when all hell suddenly breaks loose among the fish-eaters. (more in alt text)
The hummingbirds were in a mood today. None of them would let the others near the feeders, which meant none of them were near the feeders. I finally got this silhouette of one of them in a nearby tree plotting against the others. While I'm muttering curses at the hummingbirds, an osprey suddenly appears. Now, you don't often see osprey this close to the house because there are a pair of eagles next door, but apparently this one was feeling brave. He or she would come to regret it, as immediately on catching a fish, the eagles moved in, causing the osprey to drop the fish and retreat in shame. In the middle of all this, out of nowhere this great blue heron flies over my head and parks itself at the top of the tree next to me, where it can see the eagles and the osprey they're chasing off. After a few minutes it takes off in their direction and I lose sight of it through the trees. After chasing the osprey away, the eagles went back to their tree to keep an eye on things. This isn't the tree their nest is in, but it's the tree with the best view of the water. I've seen this pair many times over the years, but usually one sits here while the other patrols the neighbourhood. I think this is the first time I've seen them sitting together. I watched them for a while, and listened as they chirped away. They were very chatty all day, and I suspect this conversation was about that pesky osprey.

If you've ever wondered 'what is the longest free ferry ride in the world?', it's this one: across Kootenay Lake from Balfour to Kootenay Bay. There are two different boats that run this route, the MV Balfour and the MV Osprey 2000. This is the Balfour, the smaller of the two.

This is the MV Balfour, the smaller of the two ferries that run this route. An electric-ready ferry for this route is currently being built at a shipyard in Nelson BC.

Just patio plants doing patio plant-y things.
The little orange flowers came up as part of a pack of mixed wildflower seeds. It's hard to tell on camera, but they're so smooth and shiny that they look plastic. Closeup of a purple morning glory. Seedling label said butternut squash, so when round green squash appeared instead, I worried I had somehow broken the plant! But no, it was just mislabeled.

Yesterday's random cellphone pic of the lake and bridge really took off, so of all of the many many many pictures I've taken of them over the years, here are some of my favorites:
