In a Japanese interview with Shigesato Itoi (creator of the Mother series) from Nintendo Dream magazine, Itoi states that he originally wanted to make a game featuring Mario with a story focusing on his childhood. Miyamoto hated the idea, but Itoi went ahead with it anyway.
