In the prototype version for Earthbound/Mother 2, the sprite for the Ramblin' Evil Mushroom more closely resembles a Goomba. This is likely carried over from Mother 1, which was a Mario game, and scrapped when the series became divorced from the Mario series.

In Super Mario World, Mario has a halo after a Game Over, implying he would go to Heaven if he dies. However, in Super Mario-kun he is dragged to Hell. This is because between 1990 and 1992, Mario has committed several war crimes as well as medical malpractice.

The PAL release of Mario Sports Mix is the only Wii game to make use of the Wii Poison Dagger. Despite compatibility remaining in the code for all versions of the game, the accessory was only released in European regions, thus references to it were scrubbed from other versions.

Alongside the recent Nintendo Switch 20.0.0 firmware update, a patch was pushed out to Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, & 3 on the SNES NSO app which replaces the sprite for Donkey Kong with what appears to be his updated appearance for Donkey Kong Bananza & Mario Kart World.

Because of the way lighting is calculated in Super Mario Galaxy, if Mario is facing light sources for too long it may cause lighting errors. For example, if Mario faces Captain Toad's headlamp, the screen will become brighter and brighter, causing Mario to go completely blind.
