Rage coding this morning using #TidyTuesday NSF grant terminations data.

Research in STEM Education and Social, Behavioral, & Economic Science is clearly being targeted by the current administration.

I made a lot of depressing #rstats plots, check them out

Powerful graphic. In a single day on April 25, a DOGE-fueled NSF canceled 340,226 future days of research.

Or 932 years.

[And that’s just one of three rounds of terminations so far.]
For #TidyTuesday this week, we're looking at data on terminations of NSF grants 📊

📈 Transparency to highlight the important data

🧪 ICYMI: $25,000 bridge funding for terminated NSF grants.

Major props for to the Spencer, Sloan, W. T. Grant, and Kapor Foundations for their swift action, even though we (and they) know this is a band-aid fix.

Due May 30. Applications are brief: a 2-3 page memo of 6-month plans & other docs.

Check this chart.
Purple line: NIH actual budget (as passed by Congress) after 2000.
This is in real (inflation-adjusted) dollars.

The Trump/Vought proposal for 2026 (yellow) is catastrophic, for US science and medical cures for Americans. That's a massive drop.

Autistic people have fundamentally shaped our world...an incredibly net positive community.

To condemn the existence of any autistic person is unacceptable.

The NSF has frozen all research grant awards—cutting off life-saving science midstream and demanding ideological screenings for future funding.

This is censorship disguised as oversight.

This is the part that sticks with me about those funding cancellation letters. Funding cancellation is bad enough, but working in the effort to insult and belittle the investigator betrays the fact that is being done with vindictive and cruel intentions.
It's pretty fucking crazy to grow up with all kinds of adversity and make it into school anyway and make it into science and do all the shit people say you should do to earn your place in society and fight to help others then have your government tell you that's evil actually

- Trial participants left to their own devices mid study.
- A halt to scientific progress and innovation for cancer, chronic and infectious diseases.
- Minority health research terminated.
