I'm considering it (if only because there's no Goodreads listing where I can leave a quick review like I normally might 😂).

I should have a little bit of free time this week, so…? 🤞

…called out as such), but there's also a lot of of-its-time casual racism and stereotyping, and the narrative itself falls apart a bit at the end.

Hogue coincidentally has a story in one my issues of LOVE MIRROR that I'm now very curious about.

Yeah, the timing is such that that MIGHT be the sort of thing Hogue was aiming for? But the pulps didn't really allow for such overt political messaging.

There's a genuine affection and appreciation for Mexican culture in the text (and prejudiced characters like Harry get criticized and…

But yeah, some of the terminology and the (ostensible?) white savior vibes is definitely part of what hasn't aged well.

Not literal slaves (thankfully), but "slaves" in the respect that they're slavishly devoted to Hugh/Pedro—tho the reason for this devotion is never really explained. (He's heavily implied to be a Robin Hood figure, but then…isn't?)

Set in "present" day Mexico, tho not too far from the US border.

THE SLUT! Mascara is only for evening wear, along with sparkly, clubbing tops and platform spike heels!

…shown sympathetically and often positively.

Those flaws aside (some of them owing to the publishing culture of the time), it's technically VERY well-written, and hella compelling. I had a REALLY hard time putting it down, and am honestly tempted to give it an immediate reread.

…her hero (not a thief, not a murderer, only kidnapped for love, which I guess is excusable???). Also disappointed the whole ranch situation is never really explained. Textual treatment of Mexicans def doesn't hold up to modern reading, but is better than average for the era, with them being…

Final verdict: Not surprised by the hero being a secret white, but still a little disappointed (it was well-telegraphed, so at least it made structural sense). More disappointed by the way Gerald's theft isn't explained in any depth, and by the way the author back-pedals on the dastardliness of…

Fucking called it.

I kind of love Aunt Fanny (not least because she's surprisingly complex for an older female character).
November 16, 2025 at 3:47 PM
Yup, there it is. Confirmed that "the señor" is actually secret white, Hugh Herriot. Still waiting to see if the second part of my earlier prediction is true.

That said, there's no denying that this is still a very exciting climax!

Gotta admit I'm disappointed in this development, but also not terribly surprised? It could be that "kidnapping for love" was more acceptable in a romantic hero at the time than "kidnapping for money." (Or, at the very least, considered more romantic?)

Blasphemy.

(Also, maybe this is why I'm so goddamn picky about sex scenes in the romance novels I read, and end up rolling my eyes at them more often than not?)

On the one hand, consent issues—but on the other hand, it's such a bizarre punishment for attempted murder that I almost respect it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #SeñorScreamingKissHimKissHim

AWW, YEAH, THERE IT IS.

Something something, audio erotica? 🤔😂

Weird bit of gender essentialism there, but okay.

Feel free to finish that sentence with the words of your choice. ("And then later to scream in murderous rage as she wreaks vengeance upon her enemies," for instance!)

Chapter fifteen, almost two-thirds of the way through, and we might finally get a kiss??? (✿☉‿☉) #fingerscrossed

This book is surprisingly psychological, but not at all boring? (Perhaps because the psychology on display is actually very realistic and compelling?)

They haven't even been all that physically close to each other, but already there's more sexual tension here than there is in a lot of modern romance novels.
