I found this in my liquor cabinet, handed down to me by my sister-in-law from her late mother's stash, originally bought by her father, I guess.
I also guess that means this year's fruitcakes are going to be literal heirlooms?

Something Halloween but not scary: two small dogs & a bit of decoration
A bit of front porch on a railroad-yellow house with blue trim & a windowed dull red door, with a small disheveled white dog & a slightly less small yellow dog with "tulip" ears. Over the porch stairs is a garland of colorful felt skulls in the papel picado style, with two purple paper lanterns with bats printed on them. On the front door is a ball of small plastic pumpkins. There are two large bedraggled succulents flanking the door. The little white dog is looking befuddled towards the camera, the little yellow dog is looking concerned in another direction. The front door is also decorated with a Norwegian cartoon troll sticker, an ancient anti-nyclear sticker, & a large filet crochet doily behind the window. Above it is a stained glass transom window that obviously does not belong.

Late October on the Central Coast. Indications of why the Anna's hummingbirds no longer migrate in the winter. Yes, it will be like this all winter. The rainy season is inspiring to certain garden plants even if they are neglected.
A cluster of small semizdouble pale pink roses (cornelia variety introduced in the 1920s) blooming out of a tangle of untended greenery from which also protrude a few whitish salvia flowers (Hot Lips variety). Scene is on a heavily patched street, with bright blue sky indicating that it is past noon and the fog has worn off. In the background is a railroad-yellow garden shed, a weathered fence enveloped by blooming fire engine red bougainvillea, and a youngish live oak tree A ruffly whitish single camellia blossom with a brilliant yellow center and pinkish petal edges (Yuletide variety), on a bright glossy untended camellia bush in dappled shade. In the background are some weeds and a heavily leafed out branch of a stubborn Wind Chimes single rose, and the butt and nose of two white cars parked on the driveway and street respectively. The light part of the scene is quite bright because it's afternoon. The shade is pretty bright too.

Are you supposed to use the battlebeast toys as the figures for this game?
A pair of battlebeast toys from the 1980s, packaged in clear plastic blister boxes on a colorful card labeled "series 1." The one on the left seems to be catlike? with white fur,a yellow mane, a blue eyepatch & blue & red armor. The one on the right is yellow and brown with a badger-like facial marking. The both stand with knees slightly bent, feet apart, hands raised as if about to fling a heavy object, cast a spall, or maybe surrender. The card has the words "battle beasts" emblazoned in flamboyant yellow-orange gradient decorative type with purple outlines and an illustration of a large gathering of similar armed bipedal beasts, notably a rhino-like one on the left and a ram-like one on the right. The toys are about 40 millimeters (1½ inches) tall and the card is about 100 millimeters (4 inches) tall and half as wide. The slogan on the bottom of the card reads "fire! Wood! Or water! You'll never know until you own them!"

So in case you've noticed I refer to this child as my grandgoblin, & in case you were wondering why I don't call them a grandchild like a normal person, here is an example of why. It's like this all of the time around here.
Half a mini watermelon with a random small pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter shoved so far in it I can't get it out without pureeing the watermelon, which, fair I was going to make afua fresca anyway, but, dang.

Guy at No Kings is holding Palestine, US, & Greenland flags. There are also guys with Mexico & Canada flags, & a handlettered sign. They are leaving at the end of the demonstration in Santa Cruz. A poor photograph of a cadre of No Kings demonstrators taking the street on the main road tourists use to get to the beach in Santa Cruz. The cars are patient, guving solidarity honks, & the demonstrators let them pass every few minutes.

Luis Kemnitzer & a lookalike titanic statue at the sculpture park in Oslo sometime after about 1995 & before about 2005. He is an elderly white anarchist anthropologist in a button down shirt with a full white beard & a bald head. He has placed his own sunglasses on the statue's face for some anarchic reason. He has various old man gear in his shirt pocket & over his shoulder and the sky is amazingly blue. He and the statue have the exact same slightly bulbous noses, facial hair, & stern expressions that seem to be hiding a dry sense of deadpan humor.

So we're supposed to post the most recent picture of ourselves from our camera roll, no cheating: good thing nobody specified faces, because this is what I got:
A white plump old lady hand spread out on a huge nasturtium leaf. The leaf is almost twice as big across as the hand, which itself, while short, is remarkably wide, like the old lady. The fingernails are short & worn, like the old lady. The part of the bare arm that can be seen is remarkably hairy. You can tell it is an old lady's hand because wrinkles & liver spots. Honestly the old lady is kind of fond of the liver spots. A broad band of leafy shadow crosses the otherwise sunlit photo. In the background: more very large nasturtium leaves.

Anybody recognize this caterpillar? Found Central Coast California, under oxalis & beach aster & nasturtium, over apple roots
Lime green caterpillar, round & smooth without hairs, horns, or doodads, with a light tan face, very plump, curled to about the diameter of a quarter, having a faint yellow line traced along the middle of its its side, with brown curved dashes just above and darker green dots at each segment. Segmentation is clear but not very ridged, and it has apparently a pair of feet on every segment. It is slightly smaller across than the invasive oxalis leaf next to it.

Okay so when I planted this tree 47 years ago it bloomed in mid May. The buds opened on March 29 this year. It still seems to take till November to ripen though.

And my Satsuma plum tree, about the same age, still blooms in late January through early March like it always has. I don't know.

Well. Sometimes there's a beach there (alt text explains a lot):
West Cliff, Santa Cruz, California. A cove between Mitchells Cove & Its Beach, which I don't know the name of. There is a narrow, rapidly eroding point of land in the middle distance where foolish people are standing far too close to the edge. A large pile of rip rap (big stones) has been trucked in at great expense in a vain attempt to stabilize the 20-ft cliff because rich fucks were allowed to build McMansions across the road after the it was clear that this bit of land is extremely temporary. The cliff is made of Purisima Sandstone, Santa Cruz Mudstone, & a darker, stronger layer below which is also some kind of sedimentary stuff. There's a narrow strip of sand visible but most is covered by lively surf: at low tide there's a respectable beach there! The wintry sky is soft & foggy, the waters of Monterey bay are green & brown because of seasonal upwelling & turnulent storms. In the foreground there are the fat yellow blooms & strange prism-shaped succulent leaves of the naturalized South African ice plant of the genus caprobrotus, which has contributed to the loss of our sand dunes (this part of the bay wasn't dune country, though). Not visible in the picture: a few very determined & brave surfers; the other side of the bay; the gulls, cormorants, pelicans & Brewer blackbirds I saw that day; the little dogs that made taking this picture such a challenge.

What if we kissed at sunset, under the cormorant tree at Pleasure Point?
Sunset over the Pacific Ocean, from a clifftop next to Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz County. There is a romantically weatherbeaten tree in whose branches you can barely make out the silhouettes of 3 cormorants, and you can see a smaller tree in silhouette behind this tree. You can also see a weathered but sturdy guardrail, the mudstone of the cliff, the invasive greenery, and a bit of the public restroom. The water and sky are lit up with pale pastel light and there is a bit of a fata morgana illusion of the Monterey Peninsula far across the Monterey Bay.

Although in general I do think we have a tad too many "this is how blocking works here & this is why it is wonderful" posts right now. I don't intend to add any more to the huge pile of them. Here, have a picture of a couple of goofy little old ladies:

I don't have a baby picture of Abby, but here's Žluta destroying a water bottle I had hoped she would drnk nicely from on long walks.
A small yellow puppy on a white blanket chewing on the spout of a steel water bottle. She is a bit terrier-ish, a bit chihuahua-ish, a bit dachshund-ish, & she has those "button ears" that stand up & fold over half way up. She was an eager, demanding, very oral & destructive puppy, and as an older middle-aged dog she's more trepidatious & intellectual & she only destroys washcloths & clothespins.

The little yellow dog is named Žluta, which means yellow, & the little white one is Abby short for Abercrombie as her former person's last name was Fitch, & he winked when he told people. Žluta overthinks everything, Abby pretends to be dimwitted.They both have short legs & long backs.

Black Dog Day? Anyway she was almost a black dog. Her name was Truffle, and she was The Dog of Joy. The Dog of Love was all black but she lived before I had digital photos.

CW: spider

This apparent red ant mimic spider was photographed in Central Coast California. My first! It looks very like an ant seen from the side, while it is running. It's about 1cm long & does spin thread for travel. I'm not finding a California species for it so far.
A reddish brown spider about 1 cm in length with medium length light reddish brown legs. Head is larger than body, both are elongated & squared off, & body is lighter colored than head apparently with markings? Sitting on the edge of a dark green table.
