Salt Lake violinist John Shin, originally from South Korea, was detained by ICE this week after a 30 second phone call to his wife. She says he told her he was being taken to a detention center in Colorado before the line was cut.Shin is a University of Utah graduate who has performed with the Utah Symphony and other local ensembles, and teaches children’s violin. His wife, DaNae, who is a U.S. citizen, has been vocal on social media asking for letters of support ahead of a September 2 hearing.Friends describe Shin as a kind, talented musician and devoted husband and father. Musicians have started daily “Bach for John” performances at the Utah Capitol in solidarity.KSL searched public court records and did not find any criminal cases tied to Shin. It is still unclear why he is being detained or what his immigration status is. ICE has not responded to requests for comment.
