Text - After collecting Buddy, Desden descended the library steps onto a narrow white cobbled street. It was one of the newer buildings in town, with foundation of local white stone and whitewashed wooden walls. Along with the flowering bushes outside there was a statue carve from the same white stone. It was of a bearded human man holding a journal. Desden would probably have picked a classical author or famous mage, but Bluelore had felt strongly about the academic value of featuring the biologist. Sparky on the other hand had been annoyed they'd picked the human biologist over the lesser known birdkin that had come up with all his most famous concepts first. - The Fall of Ebonwald, White Cliff, book 1

He wasn't sure what he was doing in the forest, or even how he'd gotten there. And he knew what that meant. He was in the dream realm. He'd learned to recognize it after meeting Dimamire. Little things would be off. You wouldn't remember how things had happened. And monsters would often take on even more nightmarish forms. That was the part that put him on edge, even though he knew he couldn't be permanently hurt here. He came to a clearing, or rather a clearing appeared. A space with just one tree, an apple tree. This felt familiar. He scanned the treeline, and found what he was expecting. A pale figure stood opposite him, dressed in expensive clothes. The lovebird grumbled, but took a little hop and dove off his head before flying back up and landing on top of one of the bookcases. He walked to the other side of the shelf, then to the side facing them. He grumbled, “It's a bug.” “A bug?” asked Desden. “Yeah you know, a bug,” replied Buddy, reaching up a claw to scratch his cheek, “It's kind of a pretty one. Big shiny beetle.” “Huh,” said Desden looking to Sparky with a shrug. He strolled around the other side of the stacks, tail swishing. There it was. In the lower corner of one of the windows, a large silver beetle was repeatedly flying into the glass. So shiny it seemed to glow. Desden squinted and adjusted his glasses. He opened his left eye, backing away from the door as it was thrown open. The subtle expression of anger and disappointment on his uncle's face was horrifying. But the man spoke calmly, as he usually did. He unfolded his fingers, revealing the eye in his hand, “Hello Desden.” “Hello Uncle Trombolt,” replied Desden, slowly reaching for the eye, “I see you found my eye. I've been looking for that, sometime it crawls off.” “It just crawls off?” asked his uncle skeptically as he wrapped his fingers around the eye once more before Desden could retrieve it. Calmly he asked, “Where's your cousin?”

Lineart of Sparky, a humanoid bird in robes. Reality settled in like a blanket. They were really doing this, and they were really going to get in trouble for it later. Estella felt uneasy. She squinted, “Ugh, it's awful dark. We should have brought a lantern. -You think the schoolmaster would mind if. . ?” “I. . . can solve that,” replied Sparky. He shifted, on hand still on the reins and reached into his bag and pulling out a large dark object. He held it in front of him, whispering in the arcane tongue. Brilliant green flame burst to life within the iron lantern. He held it aloft, and let go. It floated there over him, the green glow highlighting the trees and undergrowth around them. “Oh! That's a magic bag isn't it? Something like that would be too impractical to carry around in it otherwise,” said Estella.

Sketch of Sparky the birdkin in robes. He has a ring on a string around his neck. He forced the decay sprite into the talisman. It's mushroom like shape deformed, squishing but not breaking, before the talisman pulled it in. He poured out his magic, murmuring in the arcane tongue. Green light flowed from his hands into the emblem, back out out it's open mouth, and fell over the bones. They shook, rose about half a foot, rearranged slightly, and started clicking into place. The living horses paced uneasily as the skeletal one settled into place. The bones clicked as it's head turned towards them. Sparky wrapped up the chain and tucked the talisman away. He stepped forward and climbed onto the undead beast's back. He gave it no obvious command, but it started walking forward regardless. He looked to the others, “Well. . . let's go.”

He turned to one of the guards with free hands, “Go up and alert Lord Arrowin that we'll have prisoners ready for his inspection in the foyer.” The man nodded and hurried up the steps and through one of the double doors. The guards holding them followed. There were some similarities between Arrowin's Manor and Nightshade Manor. The foyer was vast, with doors leading off into other rooms, and a grand staircase stood across from the doors. The floor, stairs, and molding were of dark wood. But the walls were covered in the gaudiest red and black wallpaper, and hung with more tapestries and paintings than were tasteful. Dark wood side tables were cluttered with vases, candelabras, and knickknacks.

The carriage horses aren't used to riders, but Dimamire has a horse, and there's my father's horse. And I could always ride Grimble.” Grenda's head slowly turned to look at him, “That's a goat.” “He's a Demonlands mountain guard goat,” Desden said, as though he felt that clarification made a difference. “Right, he's a goat,” said Grenda. “A very smart, very sturdy, very loyal goat,” insisted Desden. “Enough,” said Dimamire raising his voice, “My father isn't going to give us permission. He shouldn't give us permission. Passed the Witches' Woods, the forest get dangerous, Arrowin's men are dangerous. He's not going to give us permission.”

Then it turned and started to walk back into the trees. Sir D'Amico growled to himself. This was a trap. It had to be a trap. He started across the clearing anyways, looking around carefully as he entered the woods on the other side. There was a haze or a mist over here, and he could smell something burning. Moving forward he saw the orange glow of fire through the trees and heard the crackle.

Sherman, a dragonkin in armor and holding a maul. They set to work hacking off the branches. Sherman glanced awkwardly at his hammer. He felt worthless, he didn't have a bag full of useful things to aid Rhea or the company. They drug the branches out of the way. Sherman was able help with that, but it didn't make him feel particularly useful. “Alright, let's get this split, hammers and wedges,” instructed the knight. “I don't have any,” said one of the squires shifting through his bag. “Me neither, we'll have to cut some,” replied another. Sherman reached into the big pocket of his overalls, pulling out an pair of small iron wedges. He held them up, rushing forward, “I got this!”

James crawled out from behind his boulder. Slowly and quietly reached for one of the eggs. Carefully he slipped it into the egg basket. Excitedly he pulled out another egg, and another. He was on the fourth egg, when suddenly the Moraptor turned with a loud squawk. It was like the sound of a angry chicken, only a hundred times louder and far more menacing. James felt a lump in his throat as the giant beast lowered it’s head and started to race back towards him squawking. He threw the fourth egg in to the basket and snatched up one more. He tore past the boulders he’d passed before, listening to the cries of the distraught beast and the clank of the still open egg-cage door. Glancing back he could see the monster getting closer. It was preparing to swipe with it’s massive talons. Quickly James sidestepped to avoid it, but lost his footing in the loose soil and ended up rolling in the dust. Quickly he got back to his feet, overjoyed that none of the eggs had broke, just in time to dodge another swipe. Turning to reorient himself he located the fence and made a mad dash for it. It was only a couple dozen feet away. The gate however, was a bit further.
