I finished my #perzine on having supervision as a peer mental health facilitator for the first time in 10 years. I used art markers and photocopied linoetched print fragments from my #printmaking fails. I used Shay Mirk @mirkdrop.bsky.social s brilliant making memoir comic zine too.
A perzine unfolded. The cover and penultimate panels are in primary colours and soft secondary pencils. The zine pages are mostly monochrome collages of lino etched printed textures. Cover: Supervision with Sage. What I've learned. 1. A disc of etched texture with banding. Each band has words: whiteness, projection, perfectionism, defensiveness, cobtrol, fear, shame, ego, collapse, fantasy. 2. I was in such a rush away from shame, that I had to try listening, being with shame. 3. I realised I could be vulnerable, imperfect, accountable, open, humble. 4. Space opened up for accountability, accessibility, repair, consent, collaboration, sharing power, choice, creativity, truth 5. I'm co creating spaces that can hold pain, fear, shame, mistrust, grief, loss, anger, despair, with care and respect. 6. From this, the work begins. Images of a cat, forget ne nots, and ear of corn, a candle, a hand gripping a heart, quilted squares, a dandelion. A zoom menu box suggests Admit All. The innards of the zine, a risograph of two hearts, that was a tetrapak etching. I etched the tetrapak during a social meeting on our peer group, feeling full of warmth and connection. The hearts have holes stamped from them and they blur and overlap. My pertinent next to Shay's black and white zine titled Making Memoir Comics ten exercises to get you started.' It has two large pencils as a frank and a little doodle of Shay.

These are my reference photos for sketching over the Winter and by February, I'll have sketched these, lino printed at least 2 of them. This is my goal, putting it here for accountability.

I'm enjoying colouring in this variable edition of 'Port in a storm' with watercolour and markers. It's a combination of lino etching panels in caligo safe wash.

Tun shells are found across the world oceans, including the Sudanese coast of the Red Sea. They are among the oldest forms of barter currency and were prized for their beauty and size. This print was etched onto a tetraoak carton and printed at our open access print works.

I get so angry with him because he seems to think so very much less of you than I do. The reason I get so angry with him is that sometimes, I think he sees exactly the kind of potential in you I do, but rather than nurturing it to help you thrive and grow, he wants to squelch it to convince you to put all that great energy into him and him alone, in part so that he doesn’t have to do it for himself, and have to improve himself to be worthy of people like you.

Brings to mind Robert Spitzers admissions to Jon Ronson for 'The Psychopath Test'. Atypical child syndrome has been a popular concept for psychiatry for the life of the DSM, this next edition will pathologise kids who have 'emerging personality disorder traits.'
‘Were there any proposals for mental disorders you rejected?’ I asked Spitzer. He thought for a moment. ‘Yes,’ he finally said. ‘I do remember one. Atypical Child Syndrome.’ There was a short silence. ‘Atypical Child Syndrome?’ I said. ‘The problem was when we tried to find out how to characterize it. I said, “What are the symptoms?” The man proposing it replied, “That’s hard to say because the children are very atypical.”’ He paused. ‘And we were going to include Masochistic Personality Disorder, but there were a bunch of feminists who were violently opposed.’ ‘Why?’ ‘They thought it was labelling the victim.’ ‘What happened to it?’ ‘We changed the name to Self Defeating Personality Disorder and put it into the appendix.’ When I asked Robert Spitzer about the possibility that he’d inadvertently created a world in which some ordinary behaviours were being labelled mental disorders, he fell silent. I waited for him to answer. But the silence lasted three minutes. Finally he said, ‘I don’t know.’ ‘Do you ever think about it?’ I asked him. ‘I guess the answer is I don’t really,’ he said. ‘Maybe I should. But I don’t like the idea of speculating how many of the DSM-III categories are describing normal behaviour.’ ‘Why don’t you like speculating on that?’ I asked. ‘Because then I’d be speculating on how much of it is a mistake,’ he said. There was another long silence. ‘Some of it may be,’ he said. Maybe I should. I make a lot of prints at WYPW but this is my best print of 2025, it is a Brown Tun shell. I saw it in Manchester Museum but Tun shells are found in the Red Sea, where Sudan has a coast. I'm joining the amazing Creatives4Sudan auction to raise funds for victims escaping genocide in El Fasher.

In 2015, a pilot scheme within the NHS that embedded cops in mh teams was happening. In the pilot scheme report, a young patient had their GIS referral withheld until they complied with the plan to reduce their 'high intensity' mh crisis 'behaviours'
As Paul Jennings worked on developing the programme, the IRP continued to work with vulnerable patients, recruiting more into the programme throughout 2015. Two further case studies are provided in the SIM Pilot report [50]: Greg: Greg was recruited to the programme in February 2015. As a trans man, Greg was seeking a referral to Gender Identity Services. Despite full recognition that such a referral would go a long way in resolving Greg’s recent crisis, the referral was deliberately postponed, in the most exceptionally shocking display of transphobia, until he could “demonstrate emotional and behavioural stability” under the IRP. Greg’s outcome is described as positive due to the reduction in his use of services, however, it is not clear whether this was because of the IRP or (as his crisis demand graph shows) he was simply experiencing an unusual and isolated period of crisis, which resolved itself after a short time. My ego was bruised in a really hurtful conversation recently but I am deciding not to waste more time ruminating. I don't have to please everybody all the time (including my ego.) Back to the printmaking.

Penguin copy of Ways of Seeing by John Berger with a Magrittes Key of Dreams. Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak. But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it. The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sun set. We know that the earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight. The Surrealist painter Magritte commented on this always-present gap between words and seeing in a painting called The Key of Dreams.
