Well, but you make the point yourself: you're not a professional. Professional translators are fluent in both languages and have a grasp of context and idiom necessarily for fiction. As for "it must happen a lot," remember translations have been happening for thousands of years before "AI".
As a genuine question, how often do professional human translators use AI tools? It must surely happen a lot. I'm not a professional, but from experience, it makes a huge difference to efficiency (though I was working on a technical subject with less need for florid language).
