I'm starting a Substack! I'll be writing illustrated posts on different software topics. The first series is going to be all about AWS networking. Here's the first post on VPCs www.ducktyped.org/p/why-is-it-...
An illustrated guide to Amazon VPCs
In this section, I talk about why VPCs were invented and how they work.

The detention of Mahmoud Khalil puts all Americans fundamental rights at risk. And if you can’t see that because you oppose his politics, well that’s exactly the reaction Trump and his cronies are counting on. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
Mahmoud Khalil’s Detention Is a Trial Run

Finished getting our Maestro E2E tests going on @expo.dev EAS docs.expo.dev/build-refere...
We use GH Actions and EAS so all I had to do was create a small custom build config and a new build profile, so in GH before the `eas build --auto-submit` step, we have an `eas build --profile maestro` step

Thread on a side project I'm doing to give back to my community. I'm bringing a local non-profit's digital presence from 1997 to 2024. It's not live yet, but soon! For now, check out a blast from the past, hosted on earthlink! sespewild.org

Okay it’s time for me to write a thread about bringing a local nonprofit from EarthLink-hosted one page site into 2024. With receipts!
I wish we could cultivate a culture where people get excited about and share the new skills they've learned more than the new stuff they've bought.

Solved our non-US SMS login issue! Twilio quietly switched off all non-US/Canada geo-enabling so we had to dig around the dashboard and find that page, then manually opt-in for each territory, and then opt out of those that weren’t labeled “high risk” but they emailed us saying they actually were 🥲

this is our actual climate future staring us in the face - no consensus reality or shared source of authority, rampant conspiracies everywhere, more pressure to address made up nonsense than the underlying problem

conspiracy theories are fully mainstream now
LA Fire TikTok comments are BLEAK. Every conspiracy theory I’ve ever heard plus a bunch that are brand new.
January 9, 2025 at 4:28 PM
The amount of conspiracy nonsense and general ignorance and misinformation around the fires and why the happen, what we/“they”/points-at-someone should do/should’ve done… I cannot handle it. Go read Mike Davis. Go read Obi Kaufman. Stop prognosticating and show love and support to those affected.

Getting E2E tests going for our Expo app and this article proved really helpful, specifically the string matching bit:

Kind of odd that it wouldn't initially pass on such a simple assertion, but adding `.*` fixed the issue.

@expo.dev happy friday! I'm evaluating where to run my Maestro tests, and I'm curious about the 'preview mode' disclaimer on EAS Workflows. Do you have customers using it in prod? Is it mostly stable? Would love to leverage these workflows now but don't know if I should wait a bit. Thanks!

The launch went really well! I followed it with a two week torrent of UI details/fast-follows. Dust is settling and it’s time to write a launch post-mortem. I’ve learned a few things and I’m excited to share.
Seven months of work goes live to our customers today. A new iOS app. Every commit by yours truly. I feel nervous, excited, and a bit queasy.
