It will have to be replaced with a double pole wall thermostat. Dimplex, Stelpro, and Honeywll make great double pole thermostats for a replacement.
Also, the baseboard and breaker should probably be looked at just to make sure there are no other issues.

Straight from my electrician father:
Those are really old time solder crimp connections for a 240v in wall thermostat, usually for Cromalox heaters. They where standard through the 60's to the mid 80's.
Best guess from a single picture is that the thermostat finally gave up the ghost.
