I don't know if you've seen their reply on Discord, but another very important piece of context is that the other person they were using as an example is themself :)

Nice one, this is really cool and important 🙌 But also whenever I see something like this I can’t help thinking: I wish the people who have the opposite problem were half so self-aware and willing to work on themselves. Would save the rest of us a lot of bother!

Ooh small world, my sister's fiance works for Sonic Bothy! I always enjoy hearing about them, they seem like such a brilliant organisation 🙂

Fair enough. My experience is also that it's become completely detached from its origins and I've never heard of people having a problem with it (as logical as that would be!), but then again I'm not Catholic/didn't go to a Catholic school

Wait, what? We definitely do 😅

(I wasn't actually there at the livestream so I don't even get the reference - this is just trial and error from the game)

I think it's 9pm-9am but I'm actually not sure

Ooh, I'd forgotten about this - I got VERY addicted to it at one point. Top-notch procrastination 😁 (Just got a score of 1100 which feels like it might be one of my highest!)

You're not alone. I think we're the silent majority. It's just that - as you say - the others are louder, and probably more online.

YES. My favourite place in Glasgow at the moment! Their salad is possibly my favourite salad ever

Anyway, just my thoughts as very much a layperson. I find all this stuff so interesting and love thinking/hearing about it 🙂

Like, the standards for that trope being used have raised, more work is needed to make them work - and simultaneously, maybe more people are using them *without* much thought/work being put in. 5/

they now have to kind of hide the trope, or say/do something very new with it, or acknowledge/refute the general mood in the room at the topic being brought up (e.g. “everyone has ADHD”), where a few years ago they wouldn’t have had to. 4/

Like, I find it fascinating that there are jokes that were genuinely funny 20+ years ago that aren’t funny now because everyone’s heard them before. I wonder if something similar is happening with the “sad bit”, and with certain common topics – so in order for them to work, 3/

then suddenly a bit of a barrier goes up between comedian and audience and it becomes harder for them to be funny. 2/

I find this super interesting as well! I wonder if part of it is that stand-up kind of has to be either fresh and new, or self-aware in its use of cliches/tropes, in order to be funny – if everyone in the room is thinking “Ah yes, this trope” and the comedian doesn’t acknowledge that, 1/

Hmm, not in spam for me either. And I've been keeping an eye out, because I did think it might be today. Ah well. It's always a long shot, and this is still probably fairer than the old system

Wait, what? I didn't get an email! Did they only go out to a random selection of people from the mailing list, or?
