For those of you celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow and need a conversation starter, turkey parasites are always a hit topic. Talk about Gapeworms, and turkey feather lice with weird heads. Your family will love you. #parasites #turkey #birds #Thanksgiving #lice #worm

It's October again! Time for my annual horror movie marathon. I'm going for a creature feature theme this year. The real challenge is, can I find 31 monster movies that I haven't seen?

Not a lot of screen time for #Ankylosaurs, #Velociraptor, and #Compsognathus. Since they're reptiles, it's likely that they had Pentastomids. A parasitic crustacean found in the respiratory tract of reptiles. Velociraptor had quill knobs on the head, so maybe a feather louse or two? (10/10)

#Quetzalcoatlus: Fishy diet, Diphyllobothria #tapeworm. Possible nest parasites as well, like bot flies or maybe even hippoboscids (bat flies). (9/?)
August 6, 2025 at 10:24 PM
#Dunkleosteous: Monogenean worms, it may be hard to infect their gills with that armored body, but I'm sure they can find a way. Monogeneans are crafty little #worms! (8/?)
August 6, 2025 at 10:22 PM
Aquilops: It was hanging out with kids, definitely #pinworms. (7/?)
August 6, 2025 at 10:19 PM
#Dilophosaurus: Brief scene scavenging from a Parasaurolophus. I wouldn't be surprised if it ate some larvae of #Trichinella. A nematode that can infect many species. (6/?)
August 6, 2025 at 10:16 PM
Titanosaur: Given their herbivorous diet, they could become infected with a tapeworm in the genus Anoplocephala. A stocky tapeworm that hitches rides on microscopic mites that get accidentally eaten by large herbivores like elephants and gorillas. (5/?)
August 6, 2025 at 10:13 PM
-Tyrannosaurus: Ticks, lots of ticks. Especially rolling around in that grass. Possibly the trematode worm Schistosoma as well, if there are any cercaria in the river. (4/?)
August 6, 2025 at 10:11 PM
-Mosasaur: Commensal and parasitic barnacles such as Anelasma. Hopefully not in their cloaca like a Greenland Shark. If they're eating squid, potential risk for the nematode Crassicauda. These are typically found in the veins of whales, but might be able to do fine in a mosasaur. (3/?)
August 6, 2025 at 10:09 PM
-Spinosaurus: Acanthocephala (Thorny-headed Worm). Their amphibious lifestyle and fish diet are perfect for them, especially Polymorphus (not pictured). Which are commonly found in aquatic birds. Oddly enough, crocodilians typically don't get tapeworms so I wonder if Spinosaurus was similar (2/?)

Now that I've seen #JurassicWorldRebirth multiple times, I'm going to go through each species featured and do some speculative parasitology. I will make my best educated guess as to what #parasites the #dinosaurs had based on their behaviors, but this is by no means a full list! (1/?) #science !!!

The last Friends of the Week is also our first highlight of brood parasites! Imagine if humans did this, that would suck. Art: @asturart.bsky.social #broodparasites #fish #parasites #biology #science

Friends of the Week! The Asian Elephant with a surprisingly not that long tapeworm. You’d think elephants would have the long ones! Art: @asturart.bsky.social #parasites #elephant #biology #science

I’ve been slowly but surely editing our Friends of the Week white board posts to look better than they already do. Not sure what I’ll do with these new images but there’s potential for something there. #parasite #parasitology #science #wildlife Art: @asturart.bsky.social

Friends of the Week! A new monogenean worm, Nasigulper itsgotatao, was recently described in a Gulper Shark. This is our first “Hot off the presses” parasite we’ve done. #sharks #shark #parasite #biology #science #monogenean Art: @asturart.bsky.social

On FB, I’m an admin in a group called Tardigrades are Awesome. We do Non-Tardigrade Invertebrate Wednesday (NTIW) and it’s always funny when new people report my posts for not being Tardigrade related without realizing they just reported my post to myself. #animals #biology #science
