Some patrons had fled downstairs, but many of them stayed behind for the fun of it. They left a clear space in the center where two people swirled in a maelstrom of fists and fluttering robes. The man had a very blunt, practiced manner to his form and movement. Although he wasn’t wholly without talent, Li Zanghong suspected he was a rote learner. That made him no match for Zhang Chenghua. True drunken boxers were rare. The gimmick alone might be enough to throw off a beginner, but anyone else could handily beat down a drunkard once they adapted to the situation—unless that drunkard was actually good. With her light step and dainty twirls, Zhang Chenghua made it all look so easy. Her effortless grace was apparent even with the plain robes hiding her figure, her erratic swaying and heavy blows, the cumbersome wooden chest that was slung on her back with thick leather straps. She paused to take sips from her wine gourd every so often, just to taunt her opponent—for despite his great exertions, she was steadily getting drunker and didn’t even need both hands to keep him at bay. Li Zanghong was positive that Zhang Chenghua could defeat him with just her legs if she wanted to. The saber on her belt might as well have been mere decoration.
