Birds & Butterflies of West Bengal
#YNWA
Pinned
An ecological history thread.
Diving into history of Sundarbans and #Kolkata in particular. Rhinos used to be common in our backyards even 200-250 years ago. Alongside other mammals like tigers, deers, and crocodiles, they used to frequent the proverbial streets of Calcutta. #mammals
Day 5 of proving bird names makes no sense.
The naming is all over the place for this fairly common north American warbler. A name is supposed to describe the species/paint anyone a mental picture easily. This species got its name for the shape of the nest it builds🤦🏻‍♂️

First ever record of Pectoral sandpiper from eastern India in its entirety. Photographed off the coast of Bay of Bengal in frazergunj by a team of 5 bird watchers at midday yesterday. Found roaming in a pond a bit away from the actual shore. This is a vagrant for India.

Photograph off Facebook.

Found some people really upset about a death across the world. More than a genocide actually. So it seems to be a good day to post this.

Day 5 of proving bird names makes no sense.
This is another interesting one. This fairly common Australian robin was called brown flycatcher till 1926. Then its name changed under colonialism supposedly due to its winter call.

Now it’s a mob boss. Or a porn star.

Intellectual and moral rot has set in so deep in this country that a known YouTuber is defending corruption?? What????

These specimens are above and beyond the level of mockery and insults. I refuse to acknowledge them as humans anymore

Day 4 of proving bird names makes no sense.
This is an interesting one. It was supposed to have a hummingbird added to its name at the end. But during some point, someone decided to omit it and that name have stuck since! Like what???

I give up🙏🏻

Ohh my god. A flycatcher is stuck with a depressing name because someone wrongly identified it instead of pewee. Talk about injustice😔
There's actually a story on this one... it was based on the "sad" call it supposedly made, but it was discovered later that the namer had identified the wrong bird with the call. That's sad.

Day 3 of proving bird names makes no sense. Like what is even this? Can you be any more literal??

Saturday was sad. So happy Sunday?
This west Mexican wren is unbothered by the world and permanently off sadness.

Dat 2 of providing further proof that avian naming makes no sense.
September 7, 2025 at 1:25 PM
Okay then.
Let’s start with this inexplicable name. A Jamaican flycatcher who is forbidden to be happy.
This is one of those names that absolutely shut me up with the suddenness, the fact that it hasn’t been changed since is even more ridiculous.

I would loveeee to know the lore behind its name

When Sylvia Plath wrote, “being born a woman is my awful tragedy”, the entire female population of the Indian subcontinent felt that personally
Dowry Deaths: India’s Unfinished Battle With A Banned Tradition

NCRB data shows that in 2022 alone, 6,450 cases of dowry deaths were recorded across the country, a figure that has barely shifted in five years despite the practice being outlawed more than six decades ago.

Apparently a slogan is a terrorism while this is not.
On video, a rescue operation in a hospital is attacked. The level of war crime committed off video is not even comprehensible. The pattern of attacking the journalists, children, women, wounded are still the same months later.
Ghouls.
Un crimen de guerra retransmitido en directo. Israel acaba de asesinar a equipos de rescates que estaban actuando en el hospital Nasser en Khan Younis tras un ataque con drones contra un periodista.

NTCA on July 25th filed an affidavit in Bombay HC stating they were in process of strengthening the definition of tiger corridors based on various criteria. About a month later, they flipped on their own decision and included only the least cost tiger pathways.
You can only laugh because logic🚀

Neither they will progress nor will they let anyone progress!
Sci-Hub has been ordered to be banned across India by a Delhi HC order. Entirely a section of Indian academia runs on scihub. The students who cannot afford subscription are gonna be left in the dark.

Pedophilia used to be a career ended in any field let alone politics. Now it’s another promotion in Israel and govt coordinated escape plan from US. Unreal.
Paul’s right, it’s unreal how little traction this story has gotten.

Back from a field visit where I finally managed to photograph a chocolate albatross after years of seeing it, and well ignoring it. An incredibly common butterfly in the sub-mountainous regions of India. Their large scale mud puddling in riverbeds is a sight to behold.

Every Bengali is Bangladeshi, every punjabi is khalistani and every Kashmiri is terrorist. The country is rotten to the core

Here’s your distraction!
Petitions emerged, civil groups formed overnight to repel this. More outrage than voter list fraud, Manipur presidential rule, constant dehumanisation of Indian Muslims and other minorities, targeting of Bengali speakers.
Slow caps for this country

237 journalists killed since this began. More than any conflict/war. It’s a war crime to target and kill journalists. But then again everyone is Hamas because the Israeli government said so.
Interesting timing too, just before the entire Gaza city occupation. International law is truly dead.
BBC International Editor Jeremy Bowen has confirmed that the entire Al Jazeera team in Gaza City has been killed.

A slogan is considered terrorism while this human failure is still roaming scot free without any charges. What a world👏🏻
Nick Tenconi. Leader of UKIP, last Friday. I have intentionally slowed the clip to demonstrate exactly what he is doing, to avoid any confusion. This sort of thing has become more normalised in so-called Western democracies. Whilst demonstrating against genocide, can get you arrested.

Feels like I haven’t posted birbs forever with everything that’s been going on lately.

So here’s a Brahminy Kite. Rather his postcard. On a windy, cloudy day flying over chilka lake trying to make sure he stays airborne in strong headwinds while looking out for potential prey.

It’s so disheartening to see absolutely zero talk about book ban in Kashmir. All the pompous book club and bookstagram people have turned a blind eye. Ironically, the political ideology that is so against censorship somehow does the most censoring.
