My team and I were also privileged to have a good exchange with him about his work at TESOL graphics and ours at #SingTeach, our teacher-friendly e-magazine. Looking out for more collabs!

Really enjoying hosting his talk for @rppg-t4i.bsky.social's 4th webinar series on "Evidence Ecosystem in 'Close-to-Practice' research" - a term I've never heard before. Fascinating to hear about the work and research the @natinstteaching.bsky.social does.

Guess I'll recommend #BlueArk nonetheless! Might be good to decide which years you might want to export in case you end up like me.

Very interesting that this tweet, written in 2021, is now quite the joke on #BlueSky.

I just watched half of the documentary, Buy Now, on Netflix and the simplicity of online purchase is the reason why it's sinister too. Heading out to the shops could be one solution.

Q: with respect to Minister's aspiration of the pedagogy of one, what are your views?

Mutlu: Pedagogy of one has been shown to be powerful for certain types of learning. But learning is much more than mere acquisition. We need to blend with social constructivist pedagogies.

Qn: Why is teachers’ Trust in EdTech more pertinent now, in the era of GenAI than before in the era of Web 2.0? Does it affect their acceptance leading to adoption?

Beware of confirmation bias, and also not to lose trust immediately when an error occurs.

He suggests to think about specific pedagogical approach when using these tools. Inquiry based learning is a good approach, before giving them the tool to sensemake, rather than to generate responses.

Q&A session: What is your view on students replacing their learning with AI generated answers? How do we ensure AI is use as an aid for student's learning, instead of using AI to complete their homework?

Great conclusion for considerations!

Research on AI was embarked on to understand our own intelligence. We need to discern when to use AI and when the risks are too great. Consider what the long term implications of using AI on our own competencies are. Research in long term effects is still lacking.
November 24, 2024 at 2:36 AM
A good reminder that the more we use AI, the more our own competencies could decline. Perhaps the way forward is really on how we augment our cognition with AI.

Despite the promise of AI, Mutlu reminds that it's not always possible to develop mathematical models of everything.

In a private school in the States, AI is used to help students gain content knowledge for about 2 hours, followed by about 6 hours of working on lifelong skills. If that's the way forward, then assessments of students really should change.
November 24, 2024 at 2:12 AM
Why isn't it prevalent in mainstream education then? Many different factors affect the effective application of AI. Researchers really should be mindful that it is not just AI but AI in an ecosystem.

The opening video on new ChatGPT4.0 was really impressive. There is some evidence of impact of intelligent tutoring systems. And AI can be an applied tool for teachers and students.

I really liked her closing at the end, that research knowledge needs to influence practice, and vice versa! And mindsets, skills and capacity on both sides need to change for the troubled waters between reach and practice to be bridged. #RPIC2024
