But capped? and subject to review every 2.5 years, with immediate deportation without cause if your home country is deemed 'safe'. You must 'assimilate', but that knock on the door could come at any time. The media reporting is hopelessly muddled on rules for 'legal' v 'illegal' migration though.

My seven-year-old grandson told his Dad and me a few weeks ago that he thought we shouldn't eat meat 'except for chicken and pigs because they're dumb'.

There is a strong argument for the whole of existing East Cambs to be in a unitary with Cambridge and South Cambs—and possibly the south of Huntingdonshire too. Places like Dullingham and Littleport clearly belong with Cambridge; and places like Yaxley and Water Newton with Peterborough.

It's very frustrating that the Labour Government is making such a bodge of it. It would be a great opportunity to resolve the issues of Royston, Newmarket, Mildenhall, Haverhill. But councils are being rushed into using existing districts as building blocks which is unsatisfactory in so many ways.

And sky-high house prices in Cambridge have a consequence for transport planning. People have to travel from where they can afford to live, to where jobs and colleges and amenities are, along arteries that slice through the land in between. Those commuters are also part of the economy of Cambridge.

I was driving up through Little Downham last week in broad daylight and saw one standing on the triangle of green space at the junction of Ely Road with Cowbridge Hall Road. It finally plucked up the courage to cross the road.
