I think that the Spanish Inquisition is a good example of religion “gaining influence”.
What I see happening in America is a rise in fear, hatred, bigotry, intolerance and violence. If that is the result of the power of religion, that belief system has nothing to do with God. Absolutely, nothing.

I agree and understand your point. To me, there is hope that the EU will continue to step up and address the existential threat that faces Europe and the world. My point is that in the USA, there is no hope because our president doesn’t believe in democracy and has always supported Putin.

This is why Ukraine “won’t win”. The Ukrainians have fought effectively against an enemy willing to absorb enormously loses for limited gains. The reason is that Donald Trump wants them to lose. His reasons are petty and personal. That sums up America’s foreign policy. And, he is a Russian asset.
