A letter from @andrewpgeddes.bsky.social on the Times to criticise simplistic framing of politicians as "pro" or "anti" migration.

Giorgia Meloni’s government has lasted three years.

As of yesterday, it is now the third longest in Italy’s notoriously unstable republic.

This is possible because of her pragmatism, the discipline within her government coalition, and a weak opposition lacking a clear political programme.

Every morning on my way to work, I dodge tripods and wedding gowns.

Apparently, the latest trend among wealthy Chinese couples is to fly here to Florence just for pre-wedding photos.

It feels good to kick-off the Effective Migration Governance training with 22 participants from government agencies, international organisations, NGOs, and the private sector.

This year’s focus: migration policy trade-offs.

A joint initiative @mpc-eui.bsky.social and @eui-stg.bsky.social.

Refugees and migrants are too often scapegoated and falsely portrayed as threats.

This week, the @mpc-eui.bsky.social starts the academic year with @danghez.bsky.social, who will share practical tips on how to spot and counter false claims.

My favorite photos from the #MPCSummerSchool on #migration at the European University Institute.

Sixty hours of lectures, group work, and even a little bit of dancing.

Very good article by @politico.eu on the steady and problematic rise of exceptional border checks within Schengen.

Personally, I find this rhetoric of left-wing parties self-defeating. 30% turnout is bad (see image below) and, in any case, it is wrong to assume that all those who voted are left-wing voters.

Another interesting graph by @youtrend.bsky.social shows turnout data for this and other referenda.

The referendum had five questions: the four labor reforms questions got 86% approval, while the question on citizenship only 65%.

This is likely because the Five Star Movement backed only the labor questions.

Turnout for the Italian referendum to reduce the residency requirement for #citizenship from 10 to 5 years was 30%, falling short of the 50% threshold needed for validity.

A breakout of the results based on earlier discussions with @maartenpvink.bsky.social .and @yajnagovind.bsky.social.

How do policy-makers and practitioners see "academic writing"?

Thanks to Stephanie Acker, who was leading this session on the Migration Research to Policy Co-Lab for one of one of our trainings at @mpc-eui.bsky.social & @eui-stg.bsky.social.

Finally, you can use a new function of the dataset to quickly see the fairly uneven distribution of migration research institutes globally.
April 8, 2025 at 12:04 PM
You can also use the Database to explore specific aspects of institutions that conduct research on migration, including the gender of their directors in 2024.

I believe this is important to track. Anecdotally, 75% of the people who attend our events are women. Would be good to reflect on that.

The database offers a timeline of when institutions that conduct migration-research were created.

You can see different timelines for different regions of the world.

Overall, we observe a quick rise in the number of migration-research institutions in the last 20 years driven by Europe.
April 8, 2025 at 12:04 PM
You can use the Database to discover where institutions that conduct research on migration are.

Through the interactive visualisation, you can navigate the map, filter in/filter out institutions, based on your interests.

"Whenever I felt homesick, I listened to the voices of my wife and children over and over again – especially the girls who were always loud and chirpy".

Touching testimony of how migrants used to send tape cassettes to communicate with their families.
