Carlton Carl was one of the first board members I got to know when I joined the Observer in 2017. He hosted the staff at his Martindale home after a retreat about a month after I started the job. He opened his home and his scotch collection to us, in true Carlton fashion...

Update to our post revealing the ICE prosecutor's racist X account.
Following my reporting in @texasobserver.org linking an ICE prosecutor to a racist X account that posted apparent praise of Adolf Hitler, three Congressmen have demanded accountability, while the ICE prosecutor still appeared on an ICE court schedule this week.

I subscribe to the Texas Observer, and I have to say it’s pretty cool that the first headline story is about workers in my hometown fighting for a union.

If you live in Texas subscribing to the Observer is a must. They do amazing work.
We've been publishing stories all year related to our 70th anniversary, but today marks the actual date that the @texasobserver.org published its first issue in 1954, with the top story dedicated to a retail workers' strike in Port Arthur: archives.texasobserver.org/issue/1954/1...

UPDATE: a spokesperson from JP Morgan Chase told the @texasobserver.org they fired the operator of a neo-Nazi X account who we identified as their employee.

"This person is no longer at the firm. We do not tolerate hate in any form and take incidents such as this very seriously."
NEW: X has become a hotbed of neo-Nazi content under Elon Musk. We identified the operators of four anonymous accounts that share racist, antisemitic, and neo-Nazi content. Three live in Texas. Musk has replied to two of them. One works for the Navy.

For 70 years, the Observer has worked to “hew hard to the truth as we find it and the right as we see it.”

Now, more than ever, it's crucial we keep holding power to account. Will you be a part of our 70th birthday celebration?
