Manually edited normals seperates good models from GREAT models.

Anime models and cell shaded models in general share a lot of similarities with hard surface modeling.

In many ways they are more hard surface than organic!

You don’t need a high polycount to give a model nice round cell shading.

My base model is 25k tris and doesn’t use any subdivision.

The SUBdivision modifier is not a SUBstitute for good modeling.

Things I learned from Arc System Works models

I noticed they modeled their hands with the thumb down, palm flexed, fingers extended. Skinning the mesh and creating fists becomes way easier when working from this position.

I did my best to texture this model in the style of Arc System Works games with square UVs and custom normals while keeping it as optimized as possible.

52k tris, 1 material, 1 2k texture. 2 UV maps.

My first dragon with my latest

Can barely tell which is which.

I think I made my first dragon in July of 2022 and my latest today in March of 2024. Really makes me wonder what my dragons will look like in 2026

I feel very good about this model. Its definitely the culmination of everything I have learned in my art career so far. I think my next project will be a photo realistic humanoid character.
