New #tolkien acquisition. They aren’t particularly valuable and they’re certainly in well-loved condition but these were my grandfather’s and my dad read these as a kid. This set is the 1966 edition but printed in 1973. I love the crests on the box and Tolkien’s own art on the covers

@virginicus.universeodon.com.ap.brid.gy correctly identified the plant as Betony, which is in the second line. The first two lines pretty clearly read “Ðeos wyrt þeman betonican nemned…” Wyrt is Old English word for plant or herb, which we retain in the word “wort” of “mugwort” or “St John’s Wort”.
