#ASA2025 is physically exhausting but emotionally rewarding. Though one thing I still need to improve is schedule management as mine was horrible. Safely got back to work though the flight was badly delayed. But I had a chance to explore the midnight DC metro. Hope everyone is back home smoothly

Project Overview Pew Research Center is seeking two Research Assistants to join its Religion research project. The Research Assistants will support the project’s demography of religion and U.S. survey research teams. The demography of religion team analyzes data on the religious identity and characteristics of populations. It produces reports describing the religious composition of countries as well as other topics at the intersection of religion and social trends (e.g. religion and educational attainment, gender differences in religious commitment levels). The U.S. survey research team produces reports that explore issues at the intersection of religion and public affairs. Through public opinion surveys and other quantitative tools, it studies religious groups in the U.S. and examines the influence of religion on politics and society. The people in these positions will work closely with other researchers on staff and will report to an Associate Director of Religion research. Primary Responsibilities Compiling and analyzing data from surveys and censuses Descriptive statistical analysis Creating tables and charts in Stata, Excel, Word and PowerPoint Contacting statistical agencies to request information and custom tables Data cleaning, maintaining and reviewing internal files and databases Number checking, fact checking, proofing Performing background research, including literature reviews, contacting subject matter experts and online data gathering Assisting with questionnaire development Coordinate the translation and checking of questionnaires Education/Training/Experience B.A. degree is required. A concentration in sociology, political science, economics or another social science is desirable Strong quantitative skills, background in data management and analysis preferred Experience undertaking research using Stata, R, SPSS or other statistical software Mastery of descriptive statistics Knowledge and Skill Requirements Quantitative skills, including an ability to use Stata, SPSS or other statistical software Interest in public and/or international affairs, particularly in issues concerning religion and the intersection of religion and public life Strong verbal and written communications skills Facility using syntax commands to carefully document analysis using log files is desired Ability to balance numerous projects simultaneously Attention to detail, including exacting standards to maintain accuracy and impartiality in all work products Proven ability to communicate research results clearly and concisely Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with staff from the religion team, as well as with staff from other Pew Research Center projects and outside organizations Ability to balance multiple projects and meet tight deadlines while ensuring accuracy in data management, fact checking and research Ability to communicate in more than one language is advantageous

How can college and university administrators build inclusive, resilient campus communities before problems occur? Campus leadership plays an important role in establishing policy and setting the tone for faculty, staff, and students who look to administrators for support and guidance when responding to hate, harassment, and discrimination. In the context of rising hate & extremism, faculty members are uniquely positioned to engage with students. They can recognize early signs of alienation from the broader campus community that can push one towards radicalizing beliefs, and they can help those who might be targeted due to their identities or affinities. Staff members at an HSI may be the first people students turn to when they have experienced harm or witnessed an incident of hate. Some students may go to staff members who have similar backgrounds or identities, perhaps out of trust or a sense of affinity, with concerns about microaggressions, conflicts with peers, or reports of bias on campus.

NEW ARTICLE: How can we measure religious change in China?

We review the available surveys and religion items, addressing concerns about the reliability of survey responses. We conclude the measure of formal religious identity is the best available indicator.

The broad challenges of measuring religion in China have been well documented, but the related difficulty of quantifying how China’s religious landscape is changing has received less scholarly attention. This study is a comprehensive review of available sources that allow researchers to understand religious trends in China. We pay special attention to the strengths and limitations of the standard measure of religious (zongjiao 宗教) identity. This measure is the only religion-related question that has been consistently asked in surveys. However, it tends not to capture all Chinese people who are religious in a broad sense. Our analysis of 21 nationally representative surveys conducted since the early 2000s finds that despite its limitations, the zongjiao identity measure provides an important signal about religious changes in China in the twenty-first century.

There is a quasi-religion in Silicon Valley that views AI as godlike. This faith has always been parallel to Evangelical Christianity: salvation (transhumanism), the rapture (the technological singularity), and demons (Roko's Basilisk)

Lately the AI faith has fully fused with Christian Nationalism.

The Hackett and Tong’s thesis contains two parts:1. Xtian population growth has been plateaued and 2. The estimated share is about 2% across probabilistic surveys. Most of the debates seem to focus on the latter while few mention the former.

What Pew's Religious Landscape Study shocks me is about 47% of their US adult sample favor "the federal gov should declare Christian nation." I remember when I was doing my diss using their ATP wave 84 data, the share was 14.80%

Finally I find something Stata beats R: Stata's marginsplot does a better viz of interactive effects in multinomial models than R. Been struggling to plot predicted probabilities with 95% CIs in R for two days - Stata made it like five secs!
