FromSoftware was an established critical darling since Dark Souls, and had the committed fanbase to back it up.
If not for Expedition 33 this year, I think the game with the most potential for winning multiple GOTY awards is likely Donkey Kong Bananza, and not KCD2. So your friend is wrong 😁

My Top 10 list is closer to the top 10 according to the critics. However, it doesn't count many games that did not have a Western release.
