This is a perfect example of creating conditions that prevent a crisis. Crisis prevention starts before an event - and in some cases can even prevent the event.

"The problem with this rationale is it frames all teachers as probable threats to their students. It is akin to banning cars from the road because some drivers run red lights or speed, thereby putting pedestrians at risk. . ."
To reduce the chances of grooming and sexual misconduct with students, teachers in Kentucky are now banned from interacting with them outside of school district-adopted platforms.

This education leader shares what she believes the problem is with that rationale. #EWOpinion

Kentucky passed a ban on teachers' texting or following students on social media. The flawed logic behind it will do more harm than good. @edweekopinion.bsky.social www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...

Important work that finds school security spending is outpacing and potentially crowding out other expenditures (eg, counseling, health, social services) related to student well-being.
Excited this piece (co-authored with my grad student, Xinyu Guan) is out in the Texas Education Review. We study trends and patterns in security expenditures (e.g., SROs, surveillance tech, and safety equipment) across school districts in Texas. repositories.lib.utexas.edu/server/api/c...

I spent untold hours last year trying to get the Faculty Senate Exec committee to see these connections. It's a coordinated attack on education. Period. Defund, close, defund, close. Maddening
mistake to lament higher ed’s downfall as distinct from what’s going on in K12 policy

In the 1920s, they called their target "evolution," but they attacked universities and professors for teaching Diversity, Equity, or Inclusion.

"The pandemic was undoubtedly a health crisis, but it didn’t need to be an education crisis, nor did it end up being one evenly all across the country." —@lorabartlett.bsky.social in an interview with @ucsantacruz.bsky.social https://bit.ly/40s8RyA
The teaching profession never really recovered from the pandemic. A new book explains why, and what we can do about it.
Education Professor Lora Bartlett and her collaborators collected detailed data on the pandemic and post-pandemic experiences of 75 teachers across the country, revealing how the pandemic era hastened a downward spiral in career satisfaction and longevity for teachers.
