I kept hearing how weird Bugonia is and yet, found it one of Lanthimos’s most accessible films.

It takes a narrative turn that makes you reconsider what you’ve watched, almost as if it was about-facing a “message movie.” But I still think the message is pretty clear! This one will stay with me.

The stinger at the end of The Twilight Zone episode, “The Obsolete Man,” stings deeply.

We really do live that “Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” episode of the Twilight Zone every day, don’t we?

It all starts when the neighborhood platforms a kid who believes they are living in the plot of a comic book. Easy to dismiss at first, the neighbors slowly look for reasons to believe it.

I see my cat rubbing his face against a finished microwave dinner container and watch a fork inside of it move from facing down to facing up. I remove the tray and say, “Can’t let this go on. This is turning into a Final Destination.”

Unsurprisingly, when that Trump letter came out from the Ep. bday book, the defense was “Dem hoax.” So, many went out of their way to show the evidence of Trump’s signature and his using of certain words, as they should. But nobody ever stops to say, “If this is a hoax, why did they do THIS?”

The Trump/Kaczynski mix-up sounds like a botched recall of Good Will Hunting. The movie is set at MIT, but then there’s the discussion between Robin Williams and Stellan Skarsgård about lost potential. At 2:53 of this clip, Williams makes a point about Ted Kaczynski.

No surprise, I did not enjoy A Minecraft Movie. But I DO want to see a spinoff prequel featuring the “Garbage Man” playing competitive Hunk City Brawlers, giving it a Hot Rod type of feel. Seems like bad movies always introduce back stories that sound better than the movie itself.

Ahhhh, sitting down, relaxing, and watching A Minecraft Movie in 4K. Just what the Panasonic UB9000 was made for.

Jaws feels like it predicted this modern era. You could look at it as a warning about climate change, but you can also see it as a study on how human nature is disinclined to do the short-term painful thing to fix a long-term problem.

L7’s “Shitlist” is catharsis. Already an angry song, the heat intensifies at the end: “When I get mad and I get pissed / I grab my pen and I write out a list” and then Donita Sparks uncontrollably screams, “OF ALL YOU ASSHOLES WHO WON’T BE MISSED!”

Everyone’s had that moment.

If you’re making a big movie today, who’s your composer? Giacchino or Göransson? Admittedly there are likely several other composers out there you might “rather” have—Ross/Reznor seem to be killing it too. But Giacchino and Göransson seem to be John Williams-ing it the most these days.

Really enjoyed Sinners. It’s basically From Dusk Till Dawn nearly 30 years later with more of a cultural message. Ryan Coogler has yet to disappoint; he knows his shit.

Of course, picking a “best Hackman scene” is impossible but the one I’ve probably tried to act out the most is this one from The Quick and the Dead:

I was not expecting Better Man to be one of the best biopics I’ve ever seen, but here we are. Directed with verve by Michael Gracey, it avoids the boring, “let’s touch on the highlights” structure most of these movies tend to follow. Why’s Robbie Williams a monkey? Dunno, but I wouldn’t change it.

I really love The Truman Show. Was a movie I watched a bunch as a projectionist back in the day. I feel like the score by Burkhard von Dallwitz (with supplemental score from Philip Glass) doesn’t get nearly as much love as it should. Carrey got snubbed too but it was a strong year for Best Actor.

Really enjoyed the 4K remaster of Se7en. Heard there were some unnecessary additions, but glad I didn’t see a huge Dewback lizard show up in the middle of the library scene.

Why do these Monopoly ads with Chris Pratt and Keke Palmer look like an AI was held at gunpoint by a Terminator to force-feed the Gluttony victim in Se7en all of Bob Ross’s paints, with an edict to be “personally offensive to Thelma Schoonmaker”?

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg on a big screen. Whoa, that’s good squishy.

I think most movie buffs prefer Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear to the Friedkin remake Sorcerer, but maybe because I saw Sorcerer 1st, I prefer it.

2day, saw WoF on a big screen; appreciated it more. Takes a bit to get to the action, but it’s glorious.

Fantastic you can pick either and it’s a winner.

Watched Pulp Fiction on the big screen for the first time in 30 years today. I was a but a humble theatre usher back in 1994 and I got to see this movie for free back then. But this movie has gotten me to pay for a laserdisc, a Blu Ray, a 4K Steelbook, and another big screen showing since.

One of my favorite things about Tropic Thunder is the fake movie trailers at the very beginning, before the logos, and seem like they are a part of the trailer package (if it wasn’t for the pesky theatre logo trailer that goes just before the feature starts).

A Real Pain: one of my favorite movies of 2024. Kieran Culkin plays a character that will make you laugh, then blindside you with an insistent serious side that is uncomfortable but engrossing. Pain veers from predictable complications that bog these movies down.

Well done, Jesse Eisenberg.

Whenever I need to feel 18 again, I can watch Empire Records. It’s not a great movie, but it’s got a wonderful spirit. Liv Tyler is an all-time crush. And who wouldn’t want to have Anthony LaPaglia as a boss?

So, this will be my first post on here.

Watching The Untouchables tonight on a 4K Blu Ray and I think it’s safe to say that this movie fucks all the hard.

That is all.
