Wow! Kinda makes me wish my photoshop sub was still active. Adding a shark would be superfluous, but that marlin might look cute in a knit singlet.

I identify as this story.

Of course I oppose slavery and support trans rights. I bet we vote very similarly. I wish we had more perfect candidates, too. I vote for best available. If it ends up Newsom vs Trump, I'd have no problem figuring out which candidate *and party* most threaten the people and issues I care about.

Expect, no. But if the only choices on the ballot are A, whose party guarantees slavery or B, who personally endorses enslavement but whose party is mostly opposed and doesn't grant absolute power, then B is the better choice. Waiting for the perfect B only lets the A's keep running things.

Oyay! Oi-yay! O-yez! Marshals have some disagreements, too. Or so I’ve heard.

Are there any other beliefs you hold parents 100% responsible for, or just racism? Like kids can change religions, political affiliation, cultural views, etc., but on this racism thing, if someone holds racist views, you're full stop convinced parents were the only credible influence?
August 9, 2025 at 8:13 PM
Respectfully disagree. Mostly this thread blames parents for racist kids, no matter what. My point is that's often true, but sometimes kids come by their own beliefs despite parental influence. It's commonplace for parents and children to adopt beliefs that horrify each other, despite best efforts.

Consider parents much more awful than yours, then. Abusive, neglectful, intolerant, etc. Anyone would concede that's a lot to overcome, yet some people do, against all odds, turn out to be decent people despite such terrible ubringings. Good or bad, parents don't guarantee any outcome.

Some of the dunkers probably even had/have racist parents but take pride (as they should) in overcoming that to turn out not racist themselves. Parental influence is obviously not the *only* factor in how someone turns out, but dunkers here are forgetting that can work for the better, too.

"Good parenting" can't just mean raising a kid to have the same beliefs, right? If it's a non-racist parent, I want that outcome, but if it's a white nationalist parent, I do not. To leave room for people to overcome bad childhoods, I have to believe that parental influence is not irreversible.

After the "stupid, uneducated" start, whatever you said next was guaranteed to get flamed. You could have written "water is wet" second and the first sentence would have gotten people to argue that water is dry. I blame your parents who clearly raised you to begin replies with insults.

Rust?

Fair enough. Someone else mentioned maxing out framerates, I was responding to your specific "even then" reply to that person. I bet we agree on more of this than disagree if we had the room to do so. Thanks for engaging.

I hate character limits. Sure, most steam gamers don't use RTX 4090s in their systems. That's close to the bleeding edge, and more expensive than most either care about or can afford. Those who do, like in this discussion, won't find a $1K rig to be just as good. (Like phones instead of cameras.)
June 9, 2025 at 5:10 PM
I used to play recreational ice hockey several times a week, at one local rink, with no coaching or travel expenses most of the time. Now I play pickleball. Sooo much cheaper, despite paying for coaching. Playing isn't free, but it's way more affordable than a lot of sports. (First taste is free.)

A photography nut can just use their phone camera, because pricey camera gear isn't required, right? "Required" isn't really the point. Hobbyists tend to know enough to want better stuff. That's expensive. A $1K rig is as attractive to a serious gamer as a phone is to a serious photographer.

Oligarchs drive the message, as a means to increase and preserve wealth and power. It's mostly white people they have convinced to go along with it. The most effective message to do that has been "This is what God wants". Racism, women's rights, divine leaders, all of it. The blame is multi-faceted.

The older I get, the less I can tell people apart, esp in movies. Everyone looks like someone familiar whose name I can’t remember.

I want to add, since the golden rule still sticks from both my Cathollic and kindergarten days, that I feel no hostility toward you. From your bio, looks like we have more in common than not. I just disagree, respectfully, about the "once a Catholic, always a Catholic" thing. 😁
May 9, 2025 at 5:39 PM
The motions of "years and years of Catholic school, theology lessons and church attendance", like you mentioned? Yeah, and I'll throw in years as an altar server, youth group participation, and even some high school seminary. I believed. Don't anymore. Not ashamed of either status. Faith can change.
