Sorry we've been quiet! We're unable to go on a research trip this year, so we're focusing on personal Allhallowtide traditions.

We've got some big (expensive, international) hopes for 2026, but for now, we're going to make sure we honor Hallowe'en and Día de Muertos 🏵 Here's our ofrenda on Oct 27!

We write in close 3rd, so I'm fairly certain this is how we do most of our description. I suspect we could still stand to describe even more 😅 but maybe this reflects the characters a bit, too??

The thought calmed him down, as though the world had clicked back into order, and he looked back up at the street around them. It seemed out of sorts with the haunting screeches of the woman, as though the tone had drained out of the world while she was near and had burst back into bloom now she was gone. There were coloured paper flags stretched between the brightly painted buildings. There was colour everywhere. It wasn’t that the United Kingdom didn’t have colour, Tylor thought to himself. It just seemed like this city had embraced it far more, with the sky blue house they were passing squished up against the flaming orange one beside it. Each of the houses on the street was a different shape and colour, as though they had each grown there as individuals rather than been built. While the bright blues and oranges were unusual, there was something comforting in them. The people around him now seemed infuriatingly happy and the bright colours were jarring. He did not need to school his expression into something displeased.

Was she looking? Out of his periphery, it seemed like maybe she was. He daren’t look at her, just in case. Tylor forced himself to take a breath. What if she didn’t like what she saw? Would she have preferred someone else? What if she did like it? Holy Hell. Should he say something? An anxious thought flew through his brain and he snapped to look at her. Oh good. She was still there. Naveena, for her part, watched Tylor in little spurts as they walked. He wasn’t looking at her at all, which made it easier for her to study him as they went. What was he thinking? Was he annoyed by her? Had she made him feel awkward with that stupid feel-up comment? Maybe he was just tired. She didn’t know him well enough to say.

I'm not sure it's necessary for *every single story*. Generally though, yeah, tension is good. It's the vibrato in a conversation, or the tug that signals a dance partner to turn. It's not always negative.

“You’re claiming it’s all connected?” Naveena’s bouncing stopped as she turned a confused expression on him. “They’re on the same day and...celebrate? Honor the same people. You thought they weren’t connected?” “They aren’t.” Tylor’s tone brooked no argument; it was something his father had been adamant about. He wanted to say something unfair, but was able to stop himself, though it left him shaking a bit. “They are not the same.” Naveena’s eyebrows flew up, and she glanced down at her hands. What was wrong? “The same? No, but they’re definitely similar. Cousins, maybe? I’m not sure if that’s the word, but.” She bit her lip, thinking. What was something most cultures and religions had? “It’s like marriage,” she offered innocently. “There are different marriage rites all over the world, but in the end people are married, right?” Tylor tried to consider that reasonably. He was still tense which made it harder to give her any benefit of the doubt. Was she trying to get him to change his faith? She was a powerful being, and she was worshipped in what his father would refer to as Satanic rituals. If this was a set up, he needed to be on his guard and not listen. His father had told him every man faces their temptation eventually. It stood to reason that his would be extraordinary, considering his strange abilities. Still, she had a point. There were parallels. He wasn’t about to concede, though; they were not connected. “Not in the eyes of the Church,” he told her. Her eyes narrowed at the show of purposeful close-mindedness, a flash of indignant anger curling in her chest. “Are you the Church? I was unaware the Pope was accompanying me. What an honor. My apologies, Holy Father.” Tylor’s temper flared. “Do not-!” he expelled the rest of his breath through his nose, hearing the echo of his father in his voice and hating it. He continued more calmly, “Do not blaspheme, that isn’t funny.”

clarity as a show of trust, & then loops back around to subtext to show vulnerability. Naveena starts honest, uses subtext when she gets uncertain about a relationship, & ends up with a mix of honesty and playful subtext when she's secure.

“I’m invisible,” An said, grin widening. “Did you not notice?” Tylor's mouth fell into a deadpan. "You're visible to me." There were footsteps coming up behind him, and he unconsciously straightened, voice coming out softer. "Which makes me look so sane." “Detective Chief Inspector Peddle always said you could snatch a man out of thin air on a good day,” Constable Nielsen boomed, “but I didn’t think I’d ever see it for myself!” Constable Nielsen chuckled to himself, looping his thumbs in his belt loops. He was a large, friendly man who did little more than comment on everyone’s work, a blue Santa Claus who gave compliments and barbs rather than gifts and coal. “You ever consider joining the force full time?” “I’ll get out of your way,” An said, straightening. “I usually try to avoid police.” Tylor twitched briefly, trying not to react to An. "I don't believe I would fit in," he told the constable. "I assume I'm needed for a statement?"
