Moorfoot modern
Modernist details of the would-be passage underneath the Moorfoot building in Sheffield. Teak doors, red brick, concrete support beams & ceiling to floor iron gate with golden interlocking shapes. Various civic notices telling you to F off in different ways. the story goes that this was intended as public right of way but never opened due to potential security risks Out of use disabled loo ft a more dynamic than your typical wheelchair icon on a light fixture centred above a black door Out of use action men’s toilet ft power stance male icon on the light fitting above the door & some graffiti scribbles Tiered levels of the Moorfoot building red brick, reflective windows & concrete base. The building was completed in 1981 and until recently was home to Sheffield City Council. There are future plans in place for its redevelopment into apartments.

Boarded up windows with wooden sheets, one has a black and white transfer of a certain masked traffic warden 😶 Unglamorous black painted shop front in Broomhill “THREADS Ready to wear & Fashion Exchange Bureau” The roller shutters are down and it’s raining Boarded up window again with a b&w transfer figure, person wearing a gas mask from Threads (1984) . New preprint: Empathy, Thick and Thin

It is perhaps foolhardy to attempt to say something new about a topic as widely studied as empathy. I tried anyway! 1/
Abstract When we empathize with someone going through something, we often draw on our past experiences with the someone and the something. These kinds of experiences ground "thick empathy", a form of empathy that has been largely overlooked in the psychology and neuroscience literature. Consider how a mother, empathizing with her daughter about to give birth, can draw on her own experience of childbirth, and her relationship with her daughter, to deeply grasp what her daughter is going through in a way that others who lack those experiences cannot. I argue that thick empathy deserves more empirical attention because it is associated with well-being and helps us build networks of effective mutual social support. My analysis highlights novel risks and dilemmas posed by "empathy machines" that promise to enhance or even replace human empathy and are becoming increasingly popular as a potential solution to widespread loneliness. Even when empathy machines provide value to individuals, their widespread adoption risks imposing collective emotional and epistemic costs that ultimately make it harder for us to empathize well. Supervillain origin story: the closure of Rare & Racy
The site of Rare & Racy has stood empty for the best part of 10 years. I can’t remember the full details but it was to do with developers wanting to rebuild on the site. Dastardly. Where else is a teen to buy records, books, fishnet tights, sax sheet music & 80s does Edwardian silhouette dresses in the same place?? The Phlegm creature that once guarded the front has been scrubbed away,replaced by a skull and crossbones. They’d put a lovely big stamp on the inner sleeve of their records Alt txt: Unused shop with many layers of flyers and posters covering the windows and doors, a string of bulb lights & a scull & crossbones image next to the first floor window. Ratcliffe-on-Soar
3 cooling towers, one in front of the other, one casts a foreboding shadow (which makes me feel ill). Blue sky and single line of cloud An abandoned rusty narrowboat, the door is hanging open and you can see the floral curtain from its previous life. Above are the tops of three large cooling towers Ratcliffe-on-Soar Redhill Marina In the shadows of a decommissioned power station lies a narrowboat graveyard and boat painting yard. This is one of the boats that’s looks to have been recently repaired and given a lick of paint. You can see the clouds reflection in its shiny newness. Above are two huge cooling towers and a giant cig, scattered clouds the DRAMA. A 6 fanned security camera in the foreground appears to be to scale of the concrete monoliths Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station is now decommissioned and the towers penned for demolition. but PLEASE can we keep them, as a special treat?

A building I think about constantly is the Casa de Serralves. Spent hours here and could’ve spent a lot longer, the way sunlight moves around the turrets is pure spectacle

Ur New Years Eve flat lay All purchased from Minster Records, Beverley which might be my favourite record shop ever Scott Walker - Aloner - a US release maybs Saint Etienne - Tales From Turnpike House - so happy to own this, “Relocate” will be my theme for 2026 Various/NME - “The Last Temptation of Elvis” - picked this up because it’s loads of legends covering Elvis and it was a fiver and also fuck yeah?? Springsteen’s Viva Las Vegas, McCartney’s It’s Now or Never, The Cramps’ Jailhouse Rock, Steve Albini & Cath Carroll do King Creole, Jesus and Mary Chain.. the list goes on..

2023 vs 2025
A large ghost sign was uncovered when a billboard was removed on the side of this building. It’s faded but you can still clearly make out the text “NATURAL No1 processed PEAS” next to a heavily faded big green tin of peas 🫛 The sign has been lovingly restored. Unsure of the artist but they’ve done a great job. The tin can reads “Deliciously tender, Natural No1 processed peas, Sweet as sugar”. So glad this nod to the past will endure for future generations to enjoy Crosspool, Sheffield
