May 21 Katie Chamblee-Ryan, Civil Rights Division: I'd left D.O.J. by then. I found out when I started getting a million texts. People were saying, "I'm sorry." At first I had no idea what they meant. I expected something bad, but it was so much more total and cruel than I imagined. The new leadership was erasing our work. Withdrawing the findings was completely unprecedented. And if you read the Minneapolis findings and the remedies we negotiated with the city, you'll see they document retaliation against journalists or civilians who film the police, the use of weapons or tear gas indiscriminately in a crowd or law enforcement agents hiding their identities. And we're seeing federal agents do all those things now. There was a statement from the Justice Department in court saying you can't do these things. They took that statement away, and now the federal government is the most prominent violator.

Tim Scott 8h • For reasons that are unclear, Rep. Nancy Mace invoked my name during and in the aftermath of her situation at the Charleston International Airport. So let me be clear on a number of points. I have used that airport since long before I was ever in Congress and every interaction I have had - without exception - has been positive. The women and men of the airport police are professional, courteous, and go beyond the call of duty. Because I have lived with death threats for longer than I can remember, the airport police do take extra security precautions, for which ! am grateful. I follow their lead, do what they ask, and respect the many responsibilities these officers have to balance. I have gotten to know many of them personally and try to never miss a chance to express my gratitude. Those who know me know that I do not use profanity - in public or private. It is never acceptable to berate police officers, airport staff, and TSA agents who are simply doing their jobs, nor is it becoming of a Member of Congress to use such vulgar language when dealing with constituents. Not only are these officers sworn to protect us, but we also take an oath to represent them. We work for them, not vice versa. For those who want to invoke my name, please have the courtesy to note my actions and how l treat police officers, TSA agents, and fellow travelers with the respect they deserve. • 21K 2.5K comments 705 shares

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson denied any sweeping directives or policies were issued, telling CNN in a statement: "This is fake news. FEMA employees were NOT banned from engaging with external partners. It should be common practice for FEMA leadership to be made aware of decisions happening at FEMA." But the memos, issued last month, do more than instruct staff to keep the front office informed — they explicitly restrict certain external communications and mandate that all such inquiries be vetted by the political appointees now running the agency.

On June 12, the Election Integrity Network, a grassroots group led by conservative attorney Cleta Mitchell, who worked with Trump to try to overturn the 2020 election, hosted a virtual event with David Jennings, who oversees the SAVE system. Democracy Docket first reported the briefing. NPR also acquired audio of Mitchell seemingly speaking about Jennings at an earlier Election Integrity Network event in May. The nonprofit investigative group Documented, which often acquires audio of Mitchell's events, provided a recording to NPR. "He is in charge of the SAVE database that has the citizenship data for, you know, everybody," Mitchell said at the May event. "And he is in the process of reconfiguring the entire [thing] so that we can actually determine who on the voter rolls is and is not a citizen." Voting experts NPR spoke with expressed concern that the agency overseeing the creation of the voter data tool was sharing details with a group involved with denying the 2020 election results, but not the American public.
