Brexit exile in Spain. Passionate about science and literature. Europhile and lover of travel in general. Sometimes found ranting about video games.
Today's fun find: a fake design for a "skin cancer detection device" that's one of thousands put together by a dodgy company to sell ownership/authorship to researchers. 😆

There's also an extension for your browser called Pubpeer which when you visit an article will show a banner at the top of the page if that article has been retracted, or has comments from the scientific community attached to it.

Web of Science is a great tool to check if a journal is reputable, but most people don't have an institutional login. For most, your best bet is Scimago to check how highly cited a journal is, or professional bodies like ALPSP and COPE that list members that ascribe to their code of ethics.

Check to see if the article has "preprint" or "working article" attached to it. Secondly, check the site that the article is hosted on. If it's a repository like BioRxiv or Zenodo, reading the site tells you that the articles you read there are preprints.

Trump now making a U-turn on the sweeping tariffs he spouted off about in the run-up to election.

A case of populist nonsense meets reality, perhaps? I suspect he's been reined in by more sensible members of his administration.

As time passes, it becomes increasingly evident that Brexit underlies or worsens many of the UK's current woes.

British Christmas dinner is actually pretty great, and this is a hill I'm willing to die on.

After years of Carn d'olla (the soup is actually okay but the meat has the flavour boiled out of it as part of the process) I'm rebelling and cooking a British dinner for my Catalan family this year.

Yes.

Yes I shall.

This feels like an incredibly poorly-thought-out stance. She's imagining that this is a binary, zero-sum decision between the bill being discussed and a completely unrelated issue.

I feel privileged to be living in this corner of the world. Montserrat is stunning, especially if you explore a little further beyond the monastery that's a staple amongst tourists.

Amazing. So if I have this straight, the tories have dropped a groundbreaking high speed rail network infrastructure project in favour of building unconnected transport that in many cases already exists.

It'll be interesting to see who buys the HS2 land, and for how much.

They REALLY need to stop giving false credibility with this "both sides" nonsense.

The tory party conference today. It's a party in its death throes.
