Building a welcoming community where immigrants thrive

We connect newcomers with resources, unite communities, and share stories that matter—working to make London & Middlesex a place where everyone belongs.
Diego carries one thought with him through every challenge: "Since you have life, you're still alive, good things will happen."
He didn't finish the studies he planned. He worked jobs he hated. But instead of dwelling on what didn't happen, he asks: "What can you do?"

"I'm always scared," Diego says. "But it's just okay, do it. If no one else can do it, just do it."
He never sang in public before becoming a karaoke host. Now he sings salsa, bachata, boleros, rancheras, and his beloved rock en español.

When people think "Latin music," they often think salsa and merengue. But Diego loves rock en español. So do thousands of others in London's Latin community.
The problem? There was nowhere to hear it, nowhere to celebrate it.
So Diego created that space himself.

One month. That's how long Diego and his wife had to sell everything they owned in Ecuador and move to Canada. The university acceptance came in August. Classes started in September.
"We sell everything. And we came here like, like that."

Diego came to London as a technician who loved working with music. He spent seven years cooking in kitchens.
"I hate cooking," he admits. But like many newcomers, you take the work you can get. The question becomes: how long can you live a life that isn't yours?

Sometimes dreams plant themselves in your mind years before they bloom. For Diego Chiluisa, a childhood documentary about Canada's bilingual beauty stayed with him from age 10. When his wife got the chance to study at Western, that old dream suddenly had legs.

"If you want to re-find yourself, find yourself again, come to London."

His story is a beautiful example of how choosing a community can also mean choosing a new and better path for yourself. Thank you, Jinesh, for sharing your incredible journey with the #IAmLondon2025 campaign!

What turns a place into a home? For Jinesh, it’s the decision to build a future.

After finishing his studies, starting a successful career, and reuniting with his wife in Canada, Jinesh’s temporary plan became a permanent one.

Don't miss the finale of Jinesh's story this Thursday!

A new beginning in a new country is rarely easy. During his first month, Jinesh felt the challenge of being far from everything he knew. He missed his family dearly and thought about taking the "easier path" and returning home to India.

Jinesh came to London for a great education, but he chose to stay for the peace.

Coming from a city filled with constant chaos, he found something special in the quiet calm of London’s parks and trails.

What draws someone to a new country? For Jinesh Shah, it was the hope of finding a kind community. He came to London from India to study at Fanshawe College, choosing Canada because he had heard it was home to the world's nicest people.

He soon discovered that reputation was true.

The 2025 Eid stamp tells a story that few Canadians know: how Indigenous and Muslim communities worked together to build Canada's first mosque in Edmonton (1938).

This beautiful design by Métis artist Kit Craven celebrates this connection through a handwoven prayer rug that honours both traditions.
