It was such a delight to participate in the Rule of Law Summit hosted by the Society for the Rule of Law. Jonathan Rauch, Greg Jacob, and I spoke about norms, customs, and the founding, and the conversation was moderated by Jay Nordlinger. I was honored to share a stage with them.

Fall perfection and palette cleanser.

I am leaning into the best fall has to offer. Unabashed joy in the color, smells, fresh air, baking, clothes, and holidays. I need it and my guess is you might too.

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting the Truman Presidential Library. I gave a talk on The Cabinet and spoke the next morning for teachers about the foundations of the republic in Washington and Adams’s administrations. Teachers+books+the material culture of oval offices= a winning trip.

Yesterday, I filmed an interview on the Revolution in an 18th-century kitchen. As one does. So much good stuff coming out next year!

I had the loveliest couple of days in Oregon wine country. It was so nice to be offline for a short break, but the Virginia weather forecast welcoming me back is 😱.

For this month's Imperfect Union, I wrote about the historic context around the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 - and critically, how people thought about it at the time. That's really important for understanding our current moment. Subscribe today or check your inbox!

#OTD in 1789, George Washington learned he had been elected as the first President of the United States. Two days later, he departed for New York City and wrote these words in his diary.

In all of the darkness, speaking with readers and meeting the public at events gives me hope. There are so many good people who are committed to a better future. There is a power in numbers.

Despite *everything*, life can still be extraordinary. In 2002, I visited Mount Vernon for the first time with my eighth grade history teacher. This week she brought four buses of students to the estate, her 25th year doing the trip, and I got to visit with them. #sschat #socialstudies
