Excerpt from work in progress; “I can’t say I do want your advice,” I said, though I couldn’t help but laugh and smile along with her. “Thank you though. I am leaning towards yes, but it’s all so sudden. I don’t know if I’m ready.” “They wouldn’t have asked you if you weren’t,” she said, jumping to avoid a cowpat. “In terms of knowledge, I am.” I told myself I was being open to build a rapport that would keep me close enough to catch her out. In truth, I just needed the excuse to vent. “I thought I’d be at least forty or fifty before I settled down from my travels and training.” “Won’t you only be working term times?” “Fair point, but it’s still limiting, compared to a life of grand quests.” “Hardly anyone quests these days anyway,” she said with a shrug. “Besides, if the rumours are true, you’re in for a fun first year.” “More rumours?” I said. “I’m not sure that I want to know…” “It’s probably nothing. Don’t worry about it.” “Well now I am worrying. You’ll have to tell me.” Her eyes glinted in the sun. “They’re saying there’s a prophecy brewing.”
