It can be different and it can be entertaining.

The issue is that just labelling something as 'Star Trek' isn't enough. It has to fit with what people imagine Star Trek to be, otherwise it might as well be something else to begin with.

The novel version is good too, since you get to hear (read) what the characters are thinking.
